Trying to find the Edwards Family

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Karen Report 22 May 2009 21:18

Hi, I'm trying to find my late Grans siblings or any of their descendants.

My Grans maiden name was Edwards, she was born in 1914 in London. Her Mother was Edith Elizabeth Edwards (nee Burton born 1881) and her father was John Joseph Edwards (born 1864)

Family legend states that there were five children in total. From the 1911 census I have found Frank Henry Edwards ( born 1904 died 1991) and Ivy Elizabeth Edwards (born 1906). That leaves two children to find, we think their names maybe Barbara and Constance.
Unfortunately Edith and John split and John took my Gran with him and all contact with the other children was cut so we have very little to go on.

Can anyone help?

Catherine

All Edwards - Burton

Births Sep 1911 (>99%)
Edwards Alfred T Burton Shoreditch 1c 42
Births Jun 1914 (>99%)
Edwards Lily V Burton Wandsworth 1d 995

EDIT:- the below would be another family if Lily is the youngest!
Births Mar 1922 (>99%)
Edwards Bessie Burton Hackney 1b 742
Births Mar 1923 (>99%)
Edwards Muriel F Burton Pancras 1b 186
Births Jun 1923 (>99%)
Edwards Rose Burton Hackney 1b 674

but none with the names you mention.

If other children were older they may be from a different relationship, therefore have different surnames.

Giving a good reason why her father only took your Gran & not the other children.

What was your Gran's name ?

Karen

Karen Report 22 May 2009 21:50

It would appear from my research that Edith and John had 2 or 3 children before they married. I could only find them marrying in 1910 too. I know he didn't marry my Grans step mum until 1941 after living with her for over 20 years ( and having another two children)! According to my half Aunt he had a reputation, she suspects that he may have had a previous wife and had to wait for her to pass away before marrying Edith.

Thank you Catherine for your research- Lily Violet is my Gran and the youngest. I know that John and Edith had definately split by 1918 as he had a child by my Grans step mum then.

I too found Alfred Edwards on searching the BMD records, so maybe he's one we don't know about.

We know that Frank was the eldest and John was his father ( Mum has a copy of his birth certificate & death certificate).

Has anyone any suggestions where I might find the missing siblings?

It's been something that has puzzled my Mum for years.

Catherine

Catherine Report 24 May 2009 12:26

for ref:-
Births Dec 1904 (>99%)
Edwards Frank Henry H. Hempstead 3a 831(eldest child)
and
Births Jun 1906 (>99%)
Edwards Ivy Elizabeth Wandsworth 1d 544
and
Births Jun 1914 (>99%)
Edwards Lily V (Burton) Wandsworth 1d 995 (youngest child)

so looks as though the missing children should be between 1906and 1914 in Wandsworth, but if they were born before 1911 then they should be on the 1911 census too?

The only way to be sure if the Alfred Edwards born in 1911 with mmn Burton is part of the same family is to buy the cert.

Karen,
I've just done a quick search on 1911 census and it would seem that the couple were not living together at the time of the census.

Living with Edith Elizabeth:-
HOUSEHOLD EDWARDS EDITH ELIZABETH F 1881 30 Shoreditch London
HOUSEHOLD EDWARDS FRANK HENRY M 1905 6 Shoreditch London
HOUSEHOLD EDWARDS IVY ELIZABETH F 1906 5 Shoreditch London

so John Joseph is not there.
Have you viewed the record?

Catherine

Catherine Report 24 May 2009 12:51

John Joseph in 1911:-
HOUSEHOLD EDWARDS JOHN JOSEPH M 1863 48 Greenwich London

and living with him:-
HOUSEHOLD EDWARDS CLEMENTINA F 1873 38 Greenwich London
HOUSEHOLD EDWARDS EVA WHITLEY F 1910 10 MONTHS Greenwich London
HOUSEHOLD EDWARDS HENRY M 1843 68 Greenwich London
INSTITUTION EDWARDS WILLIAM M 1862 49 Greenwich London

do you have the same?

I would presume that the child here belongs to William and Clementina so no other children for John Joseph.

If this is correct then the other children would have been born between 1911 and 1914 ?

Hi,

I have a copy of the 1911 Census document and it shows John Joseph Edwards as living with them ( the transcript bit is completely wrong). The original document shows that Edith has 3 children living by that relationship (marriage?) but only Ivy and Frank are listed.......so one of them was somewhere else. I have tried cross referencing from the BMD register to the 1911 census ( I have even checked Ediths father in case he was babysitting) but to no avail.
I did find a Barbara Ellen Edwards born 1910 Wandsworth on the BMD register but I can't find her on the 1911 census..........I'm baffled!

Thanls for your help. Mum ordered various certificates and here's the results:

Alfred T Edwards was one of their children ( one we didn't know anything about), I think he died as a baby as theres an Alfred T Edwards listed in the first quarter of 1912.
The suggested birth cert for Ivy wasn't the right Ivy Elizabeth.
Barbara Ellen Edwards was someone else's child too.

On to tthe next quest for you- I haven't been able to find Edith Elizabeth Edwards (nee Burton's) death. When John Joseph Edwards married Step Great Granma in 1941 his marital state shows him as a widower..........Can anyone find a death listed? She is likely to have died in London.

Hi, Just to let you know we have finally traced the rest of Grans family. After a lot of detective work ( and sending Mum to the archives office) we managed to trace one of Gran's brothers family. Mum gets to meet them next week and the whole story should unfold! Thanks for your help and support. I now have a whole new extended family!
