Ivy Wright born 1914 & her sister May Irene Wright born 1917 both in Grimsby Lincolnshire. I believe their parents were George WIlliam Wright & Elizabeth Emerson but I'm not sure, as I can't find a marriage. Can anyone help with information on this family? Thanks Linda

Hi Linda, This could be George William in the 1901 census. By the time Ivy was born in 1914 he would have been 27. Without knowing his date of birth or the names of his father and mother it is quite difficult. There are many GW Wrights to choose from. It is obvious from the BMD entries that he was the father of ivy and May Irene and that their mum's name was Emerson. Have not been able to find a marriage. If you have any further dates, or names please chuck them into the pot so we can stir it a bit.

I've been told that in 1914 when Ivy was born GW Wright was a Coal ------(unreadable) & he was in the army in 1917. GW died 1954 Grimsby age 68yr but is this my one? I'm not sure. I saw the census above & also think it could be him but only base that on him likely being born in Grimsby. If it is him then he married Emily Ball 1907 & had a son Horace same yr in Grimsby but can't find a death for Emily. Elizabeth Emerson was also married previoulsy to Harry Samuel Watts Brown 1903 Grimsby & had a son John Albert 1904 & I can't find a death for Harry Brown either. I have both GW & Elizabeth with their 1st spouses & children on 1911 census, so I'm now thinking there was no "marriage" between GW Wright & Elizabeth as they both had living spouses.....but they somehow got together between 1911 & 1914? Unless I have the worng GW Brown. I have searched the trees here & sent messages to someone who I know is researching the same family but they haven't replied to any of them.... Linda

I have Ivy's birth cert & yesterday a distant cousin told me she got May's. She is the one who told me about the Wright's, she said she had been told one of her grt aunts married Mr Wright & had 2 daughters Ivy & May. Because she had never heard of the Wrights she got May's birth cert to prove the mothers name, mind you she never heard of the Brown marriage & never found the Brown or Wright marriage. I now accept Ivy & May's parents are in fact GW Wright & Elizabeth Emerson. But I wonder if the GW Wright on the birth certs is the same as the one i found in 1911 census married to Emily & the one I found died 1954 in Grimsby. I think I'll have to get the death certificate of the GW 1954 & see if there is anything on that to prove or disprove he's mine & then go from there.
I know Elizabeth Emerson married as I found her marriage to HSW Brown on a cd of marriage registers for Grimsby & it was definatley my Elizabeth as she was living in the family home & I already knew her fathers name which was confirmed on the marriage register. I knew of this marriage long before I heard of the Wright one.
In hopes of finding a living relative of these people I looked for Ivy & May's marriages but had no luck there either.
By the way - Thanks for all your help, it's spurred me onto thinking of new avenues to look for new info. Linda

Hi all Helen - yes I have tried searching under the Brown name but no joy. Have also looked under Betty, Betsey, Bessie, Lizzie, Eliza just in case. The 1911 census you found is my Elizabeth with her 1st husband.
I still haven't found any more after this date about her son John Albert Brown but I have found a marriage for Horace Wright 1933 who was GW Wright's son from his 1st marriage.
Fairthorn - the 1901 census for Wright you found is (I think) my GW Wright & the 1891 Brown Emerson census is also mine with Elizabeth as a child. The other Emerson census is not mine, the 2 births for Elizabeth, well I don't have her birth cert but one of them is hers, although I don't know which. You've also hit on another difficutly I had, there were 4 Emerson families in Grimsby at that time with some of the same names & mine were not related in anyway to 2 of them, thankfully the one we are related to only had sons.
