Does anyone in Worcestershire have an ancestor who went by the nickname of fuschia. I know its along shot but our family has lots of old postcards addressed to our ancestor John Wright who was born at Stoke Prior and these were all signed by fuschia. We would love to know who they were from. can anyone help please?

Not necessarily a nickname - but perhaps probably.

The censuses show one Fuschia -- Fuschia Fountain born 1901 in Leeds.

She is FUCHSIA in the GRO index, and there are others by that spelling, although not many.

Do you have an idea of dates?

Hi Janey
Thank you for replying. The dates are the early 1900's and Fuschia was a man who always signed himself - your old pal fuschia. I think he was from the Bromsgrove area. Unfortunately the postcards are in Canada now so I do not have access to them . Just thought I would try a long shot.

Update:
The meaning of the name Fuchsia is Fuchsia (flower)

The origin of the name Fuchsia is English

And there I was thinking maybe he was a secret agent.

Fuschia / Fuchsia Fountain was a girl. As were Fuchsia (various spellings) Brown, Roberts, Clamp, Taylor and Lane, in the censuses. I would never have imagined a man named for such a showy flower!

I kinda think that site's assertion that it's a male name, with no other info, is a bit suspect.

Even though Narcisse and Camille are male names in French. ;)

There is a Frederick Charles FUCHS who married Bromsgrove 1898 Dec Q and in 1901 is living Northfield Worcs with wife Winifred and baby daughter margaret Mary.he is aged 31 then and so would have been born 1870 in Kentish Town
He is a Baptist Minister so you will know if this is a likely connection for your father. It just seemed possible it was a jokey play on a name

Thank you Gillian. This is interesting. Never thought about it being someone with a German surname. The date of 1898 is also interesting because my father-in-law lived in the Bromsgrove area at that time.

Hi again Janey.

Thank you for your comments. I guess we will never know the origin of the sender of the postcards, they certainly corresponded on a regular basis.

well the Fuchsia was named after a Dr Fuchs - and that is how it is spelt - FUCHSIA, not with the S before the CH!!! I read somewhere a statement - "Dr Fuchs off to America" I say no more!!! I trust I have offended no one

Fuchsia (pronounced /ˈfjuːʃə/ FEW-shə) is a genus of flowering plants, mostly shrubs, and can grow long shoots, which were identified by Charles Plumier in the late-17th century, and named by Plumier in 1703 after the German botanist Leonhart Fuchs (1501–1566).[1] The English name fuchsias is frequently misspelled "fuschias".

Hi,
I have just found your search about Fuschia and John Wright. I have lived in Stoke Prior all my life. I have elderly family still alive in their 80's. If you could give me more info about your relative that lived around here I could ask the family and see if they might know anything.

Hello Belinda

Thank you for replying about fuschia. My father-in-law was born at The Navigation Inn Stoke Prior Worcestershire and lived there from 1884 to 1904 . In the early 1900's he received several poscards from his old pal fuschia. These are now with relatives in Canada but we have always wondered who fuschia was and wondered if perhaps someone on Gen ese Reunited might have had an ancestor with this nickname. My father's name was John Wright and his father was Thomas Wright the licensee of the Navigation Inn.

Its purely a shot in the dark to try to find out who fuschia was.

Hi Alice,
I livedjust around the corner from the Navigation Inn. My family has always lived in Stoke Prior and Stoke Works. I will ask my Aunt whose in her 80's if she can remember anyone..or whether my gran who lived to 95 ever spoke about anyone with the name..,,,in those days people knew eveyone else.

Leave it with me and I'll see what I can come up with if anything.

Just a thought were the postcards holiday cards from different places, or were they communication postcards from a local area. My gt. aunt used to keep in touch with family from Worcester by picture postcard. So I wonder if they were from a specific area.

What was your father in laws name who was born at the Navi?
Belinda.
