Chrissy and Leith,

Many thanks for your helpful suggestions, I will try working my way through with wildcards ... will also look up the name with birth dates you suggest. The Norfolk one looks hopeful.

Leith, I have PM'd you about Bertie Jarrett without an 'S'.

Hi Liz,

A Bertie Jarrett is listed three times if you don't put place of birth in. The years of birth are 1884, 1885 and 1886. They are living in Kent, Norfolk and Worcestershire.

Hi Liz,

I have also had a very frustrating time trying to find someone in the 1911 census but eventually found him.

What I did was using the wildcard for the first name, just using each letter of the alphabet with * followed by clicking on all variants for the surname and worked my way through. Admittedly it took a while but eventually I found him under his middle name. It was so frustrating as many transcriptions have Miss, Mrs or Master as a first name and some just have their initials.

Good luck

Chris

Hi everyone who has so kindly provided census info for Bertie's previous years. Yes, he is the grandson with Ann Jarrett in 1891.

Sorry, I should have said that I already have previous census info. I am really only trying to find him in 1911.

I know his BMD dates, plus the fact that he and his wife Dorothy lived in Limpsfield for a time. Bertie was chauffeur to the Solicitor General around 1920.

I don't believe the couple had any children.

I was just interested in where he was in 1911 - you know how frustrating it is if you can't find something, it makes you want to know even more!

Maybe he was abroad.

Many thanks again for all your help.
Sue

Hi there Liz,

Thanks, that's a good point, but he was definitely alive!

He lived a long life - In fact he died in 1975 on his 60th wedding anniversary.

He was in the Army at the time of his wedding in 1915, but I guess most men were as it was the middle of WW1. At that time he was based at Bulford Barracks in Wiltshire.

Hello everyone. What am I doing wrong, please?
I am searching the 1911 Census for Bertie (also known as Robert or Bob) Jarrett, born Woodstock, Oxon in 1887. His middle name was James.
I have tried wildcards, combinations of Bob/Bertie/Robert with different variations of Jarrett/Jerrett/Garrett and can't find him anywhere.
I have my own credits to do a full search for 1911 census, but it would be a great help if I could make the first step by finding out in which district/county he was living.
I know there are some whizzy researchers out there, I would greatly appreciate your help!
Thanks
Sue
