I agree with William-a surname ,area or other clue iin the heading "grabs the attention"

I have a fuller tree on my computer than I show on GR so often find names of interest which will not show in a search on here

I also have bi lateral glaucoma so try to keep my spells at the computer down a bit !!

Phew! Didn't think that would be so controversial. I woild be only too willing to help anyone where I can but I have limited means for doing so And I don/t live at my computer. A sought after name in the header catches the attention & means I do not need to read the threads for every message that appears if I know of no connection.
Thanks for your responses.

I agree with Ricochet that the most useful are the ones which have a clue of what is being sought in the title or the 1st few words of the post which can be seen on the board. If someone is looking for census info it saves me opening the post as I do not have access to census info.

I also find it useful for a rough area (even just Scotland, Wales) as many of us have a particular area which we know more about.

Putting the name in the heading makes no difference to those trying to help.

As long as the name, and some relevant details, are in the message, lookups can be carried out.

The ones I find irritating are the ones which have as the title 'trying to find'....or the poster's name.

I find the most useful titles are those which give a clue as to what info is being sought........for instance,'1871 census lookup' tells me immediately what the poster is asking for. And if they include the magic 6-letter word, that's even better!

If you are looking for specific names in order to make contact.....use 'search trees'...not the message boards.

Thread Subject
Trying to find surname
Thread Content
__________________________

The above is a lay out of posting a thread on this board

So my Thread Subect would be a Trying To Find
My Trying to find surname would be Smith
My Thread Content would be my post

Now when you press the submit button where i have typed SMITH that bit doesn't show......So is that my fault, no it isn't

Whether i see a name of not i'll still look to see if i can help.....It ain't no big deal

I agree with William too.

If posters don't include specific Surnames in the title they could possibly miss out on finding an actual contact researching the same family.

This could save buying additional certificates as a lot of people who have researched their family surnames are only too willing to share their certificates and family info.

However, NOT everybody has their family tree on Genes Reunited, so searching for the names you are looking for will NOT show up.

NOT everybody comes on to the messages boards on a regular basis.
So posting a message under the appropriate Surname Board, is vital as it will stay under that same Surname Board for years,

So anybody new or not visiting Genes Reunited on a regular basis...will see it, as these people will often ONLY check the Surname Boards that relate to their research.

I myself do NOT read any messages that do not have a Surname in the title and I'm sure there are many others like me.
This is purely because the boards are so busy now and the time I have available......however it doesn't stop me from helping others.

BUT....Like i have said quite a few times......If people a doing this through THEIR surname summery maybe they DON'T realise that everyone else can see their request too.

Don't forget the TTF Board WASN'T threaded

I think I understand what you mean Tina but if you are looking for a specific surname then surely its best to put it on the Surname Information.

For example I have just been checking a TTF with the name in the heading but I did not do it because of the name I done it to try and help. If I was trying to find a certain surname which I have been looking for for quite a whie now (but quite common) I would go onto the surname board. (I think I have repeated myself now)

If you are trying to help people, I beleive that all "the helpers" check all boards. I know I do anyway.

Perhaps the point is being missed. If looking for information on a specific family name putting it in the header will ensure anyone who can help will not miss seeing your post. I would love to see the name Hobkirk in a header but it seems as rare as hens teeth.

I think people will help regardless of the name being the heading.

Sometimes you don't even get a name on the thread!

I have a bit of a problem with people putting their own names as the heading when their own name is clear as the poster

Julie, I agree with William. It is not that one only wishes to read about the names in our own family but TO BE SURE OF NOT MISSING a relevant post among the many that come to this site every day. I will help with any name where I can and thank those who have helped me. Tina

IF THE NAME YOU ARE LOOKING FOR APPEARS IN HEADING THEN WE IMMEDIATELY KNOW IF IT IS OF INTEREST. SAVES GOING INTO MESSAGES OF NO CONCERN.
