Shelly, what people are doing is searching the GRO index of births, at Ancestry.

It can be searched by the child's (father's) surname and the mother's surname. That will show any births to a married couple with those names.

The thing is that without knowing that information already, the search can't be done.

The index doesn't show the father's name or mother's name, it just shows the child's surname and the mother's surname before marriage (or at the time of the birth if she wasn't married).

Peter gave the one possible marriage (which I think he had to find by actually reading the indexes for the four quarters of all the years in question, because it isn't transcribed into a searchable database yet):

Herbert E PACE
Rita M ROGERS / BENNETT

He searched for births with the surname Pace and mother's surname Rogers or Bennett, and there weren't any.

There would be no way to identify births where Herbert was the father without already knowing the child's or mother's name.

If your friend gets the Pace - Rogers/Bennett marriage certificate, she will be able to compare the info to what she knows about Herbert (his age, father's name, occupation, marital status) to see whether that's him.

It will also give her Rita's birth surname and approximate age. You might be able to find her birth, then.

Her date of birth would be useful to know, to see whether her death can be identified. Her death certificate could give a family member's name.

This is one possibility for a death -- the middle initial is right, the age seems about right, and the death was in Kent. If it was 'your' Herbert who married in 1954, and his wife was this Rita, they didn't likely have children -- she would have been 44 years old.

Name: Rita Mary Pace
Birth Date: 14 Jul 1910
Death Registration Month/Year: Dec 1995
Age at death (estimated): 85
Registration district: Canterbury
Inferred County: Kent
Register number: B12S
District and Subdistrict: 5601B
Entry number: 229

These things are all just possibilities that can only be proved or disproved by getting the certificates.

Ellen, that could be the child of Herbert Pace who is Shelly's friend for whom this search is being done.

If she had wanted her birth details posted here, Shelly likely would have done it. Perhaps you would delete that info from your post and send it to Shelly by private message (click on her name). (Shelly, you can also ask GR to remove that information by clicking on "request review" in that post, if your friend does not want the information displayed here.)

It is also unwise to put your own email address on the internet like this; this site is not private and can be seen by anyone anywhere. Shelly can contact you by clicking on your name as well; as long as you keep a current email address on record with GenesReunited you will receive notice of any messages sent through this system.

That said, there are no other births with the two surnames shown on the record for the birth you posted.
