I have a Bartholomew Gilboy. death certificate he died at the age of 34 feb 1881 (b1847). marrage cetificate he was aged 23nov 1864 ( b1841) In 1881 census his wife Margaret (spelt gillby). the lodger was Micheal Burke. The wittness on the Marrage was Micheal Burke. There is a difference with the age of Bartholomew . can anyone help clear this up.or can you find more info on the Gilboys. His father was also Bartholomew they came from Ireland Margaret b1849/1843 came from kings co Ireland.

thanks for your reply the margaret in 1881 census is my relative but the real question is when was BARTHOLOMEW BORN.

Hi there Josie,

I sent you a reply yesterday, but it doesn't seem to have been added.

Anyway, from what I have uncovered in compiling the Gilboy connections in Mayo during the 1800's is that the Bartholomew mentioned above (born 1876) could not be your ancestor as he was born to late and also he was living hale and hearty in both the 1901 and 1911 Irish censi at Ballyscanlan, Deel, Crossmolina, County Mayo.

I did unearth however, a Bartholomew Gilboy, born in 1854.

According to the Parish Bap. records he was born to a Micheal & Mary Geraghty and the Sponsors were Barthly Gilboy and Biddy Syren.

Theres an error here in that at the time there was an 'unrecorded' marriage from the mid 1840's of a Michael Gilboy to a Mary Geraghty. They had at least 4 children - Anne (1847), Michael (1852), Bartholomew (1854) and John (1856), so I presume that these were his parents.

Off course it could be argued that maybe the records got the sponsors mixed up with the parents ...but I doubt the error was that great.
