1851 Census Durham

Hi Janet,

That last one looks quite interesting. I don't think I would have thought of looking at Jonathon instead of John. Is there any chance of looking at the 1851 for Henry (re my first post) or did you look and not find him? Hope I'm not asking too much.

This one is interesting. I decided to search for Jonathan as it is a little less common than Ann, and came up with this. I know it is Pittington, but the names we know of match with your Shadwell family, and what is more the mother is Isabella which strongly suggests they are the same. As Pittington comes under Sherburn it is quite possible. And it is the only Jonathan I can find in Durham!

Thanks Janet,

Do you reckon that you might be able to do a check of the 1841 census for me for Ann? She'd be 11 or 6, I thought her mother's name might be listed on it. I'll also check into the idea of a married sister.

Thanks,
Alison

That seems a good option to me. Re. witnesses - I would just check if there is a female witness who might be a married sister of either person. This has happened to me and although a bit complicated did confirm I had the right family.
Might be worth getting Isabella's birth cert once you are sure you have the right people (age is a bit out but nothing new there):

Thanks Andy and Janet, I have something more to go on now.

Janet, on the marriage certificate for Henry and Ann, Ann's age is really hard to read, as far as I can tell it's either 26 years or 21 years meaning that in 1851 she was either about 21 or 16 years old. I think the first census that both you and Andy gave me is the right Ann. I'm basing that on the civil parish being Shadforth because that's where Henry and Ann were married.

I just checked the witnesses too but they don't appear to be related.

And again! Alison, why is Ann's birth year so wide? Is it that the marriage cert says "of age"? If you have her marriage cert, who are the witnesses? Might offer a clue to other family members.
