Harris 27 <<born upnor kent Henry Harris 7 James H. Harris 4 Lucy (Lizzie) Harris 3 <<found as a servant in 1891 Mary A. Harris 2 Also after sending for the likely births of Mary A 1879 and Lucy 1877 who is plain Lucy " the image has Lizzie lined through as a mistake",both come back as not right father. I have lucys marriage to my g grandfather Herbert head. So more help for a birth for any of the children for mothers maiden name would be great as finding James and Elizas marriage is proving difficult also.
thanks viv

Choccy I think you are wonderful, brilliant and fantastic I will send for that marriage today and also email your find to Lucys g grandaughter in Canada,we have searched between us for a while now since getting in contact {we have lucys husband Herbert as both of our g grandfather,he shacked up with my greatgran after leaving Lucy],and got nowhere. Two of lucys daughters were sent out there by Barnardos, one, Susannah ,came back in 1926 Eliza stayed, but would not speak of her family and said she was an orphan,so this will add a bit more to our joint family history I hope. viv

So pleased I have helped. Haven't found in 1891, but did find Eliza (James' wife) in 1901 as a visitor to a household in West Ham. She is said to be married, but not finding her husband in 1901. Assume you have 1901 census returns.

We have thank you Choccy. All except the 1901 for James and the 1891 for both of them and poss children with them. The trouble is that Lucy at least ,gives different places of birth on all census ,so not sure exactly where all the siblings were born as they prob changed their birth places too,and Harris being such an UNcommon name,NOT, its been pretty hard to track them all..

Out of interest, what happened to the two boys of the Head family? Did they get taken in by Barnardos too?

From the top. Lucy and Herbert parted company in about 1904,thats when the girls Susannah and Eliza were in Barnardos,my canadian "cousin"has photos that came when she got the records from Barnardos, and sent me some.
In 1911 we find Herbert and Jane ,my greatgran, with my Gran Rose 1909,who was Herberts and older sister by ??dont think she was Janes hubbys ,maybe, maybe not. With them are Walter and William,so Herbert kept them, and photos of them in WW1 uniform were found after Elizas{in canada}death.
We find Lucy living with someone else on 1911 and a few more kids by him, they eventually married in 1917 as Herbert my Ggrandad died in 1913,looks as though the war got in the way of the marriage.
My gran and other siblings were put in Barnardos after Herberts death, but my gran couldnt go to Canada as she caught everything going and was constantly in and out of hosp, and the others didnt want to go as they loved their mum and didnt want to not see her anymore.
Jane did take her children in and out of the home ,but only ever kept one all the time after Herbert died, and that wasnt his child !
I have tracked the boys marriages and descendants to a male born in about 1944,but have never tried to make contact.
The strangest thing of all though is Herberts death cert Lucy was present at the death and was the informant,so they all must have stayed in contact. viv

Oh, how sad. It's amazing what you find when you start delving.
Perhaps you can now find birth certificates if the marriage I found is correct.

I do hope so as does my cousin. I am so glad my nan didnt go as the full story of Susannah and Eliza was not a happy one until they got maried in Elizas case or came home to Lucy in Susannahs case, with a child" created" upon her by the farm owner where she was placed. She was extremely beautiful in all the photos I have seen,my nan was very much plain jane. I have also tracked her daughters descendants for cousin in canada, but leave that to her if she wishes to try to find them and make contact .
I have to go for a good cry now as just thinking of what the poor children sent there for a "better life"went through is upsetting to say the least. viv

OOOhhh Viv,
I DO know what you mean!
Have a good cry and come back feeling better - It does make you feel so thankful that 'our' children have not had to go through all of this doesn't it??
Best wishes,
Dea Xxx

For Choccy from Canada.
FANTASTIC - I also noted in the 1901 census Eliza A Harris was a visitor with Sarah Burton. There is also the birth of a Sarah Hope in Aylesford, Kent in the right year that would correspond with her age in the 1901 census. I've didn't find a marriage of a Sarah Hope to a Burton, however I'll send off for the marriage certificate as noted below. Will let you know when it comes in. Thank you so much and thank you to gensreunited member!!!!!!
