In 1911, is she with a husband or children or other family members?

Do you have her childrens' names and DOBs, and do you have her on other censuses?

You know her husband's name becuse you have the marriage certificate. Info about him could help to place her in time and space before the marriage possibly. His name, the date and place of marriage ...

It's always best to give all the info you have. Because things like censuses can give hints, people will go off looking for it, which would be kind of a waste of time if you already have it.

If you have any better luck identifying that William and Mary in earlier censuses, you'll be doing better than me!

1881 is the only census searchable by occupation at Ancestry, and he's the only one found. Your William could have been deceased by then, of course. Maybe the marriage certificate you have specifies ...

Well, I had to find her married surname for myself, so I did.

1911

Mary in Kent born in Llanfair 1847 +/- 3 years.

WILKINSON MARY 1846 65 Bromley Kent

-- so, looking for people living with her, this would be her husband?

WILKINSON JOHN M 1847 64 Bromley Kent

1901

Name: Mary Wilkinson
Age: 51
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1850
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: John
Where born: Banger, Wales

Civil parish: West Wickham
Ecclesiastical parish: St John the Baptist
Town: West Wickham
County/Island: Kent

John Wilkinson 51- born West Wickham, Kent - general labourer
Mary Wilkinson 51
Caroline Wilkinson 24 - born West Wickham, Kent
John Wilkinson 20
James Wilkinson 18
Frank Wilkinson 13
Emily Wilkinson 7

This is the marriage?

Marriages Jun 1875
FURNESS Hannah Poplar 1c 1065
Silvers Thomas Poplar 1c 1065
> Wilkinson John William Poplar 1c 1065
> WILLIAMS Mary Poplar 1c 1065

Births Jun 1877
WILKINSON Caroline Bromley 2a 344

You are looking for her in 1851-61, so you must have her in 1871.
In Wales? In Kent?

John W Wilkinson was in West Wickham, Kent, Bromley reg dist in 1871 with his parents. The eldest daughter in 1901 was born in Bromley reg dist. If they married in Poplar, perhaps it's because Mary and her family were living there ... but if you know where Mary was in 1871, you're not telling.

Would have liked to help, but the available and possibly essential info just hasn't been given, all along!

Have you looked at this fellow in 1871?

Relation: Master
Gender: Male
Where born: Llanfair, Caernarvonshire, Wales
Civil parish: Vessels
Town: Harbour Falmouth
County/Island: Cornwall
ED, institution, or vessel: Penman Castle

That William does look promising, I have to say!

I definitely agree about not offering iffy info as if it were gospel, but it's still nice to know what info there is. ;)

About bigamists -- John may not have been one, but you can bet you've got one in your tree somewhere. Not formally bigamy probably -- but it was tremendously common for estranged spouses to form new households with new partners and represent themselves as married. No divorce for the masses, after all.

If you could find another Mary in 51 or 61 with a mother who was a mariner's wife ...

Happy hunting, and keep us posted!
