Find Ancestors

People often presented themselves as married, when no ceremony had actually taken place..... and sometimes never did.

I hunted for ages for a marriage prior to 1891 when a couple were shown as married with 3 daughters, - all with his surname.
I later extended the search years and found they married in 1892. No idea why they waited, as both were widower / widow so were free to marry many years before that.

GlitterBaby has edward on the 1881 census as Widow, lodging with Charlotte Clarke,
On the 1891 census he is down as married to her.
But i can't find that marriage either.

A possibility is that Edward was already married.

Hard to find out with the name Edward Smith.

Yes, I have found this info,
I was hoping somebody would find the marriage of Edward & Mary, Alfred's parent's,
But as Glitter baby has said, They were probably not Married.
But on the 1881 census Edward states he is a widow !!

No help in finding his father but his looks like Alfred living at his married sister's home.

In 1861 the Smith/Jones lived near William Rounce aged 11

Can't understand how Alfred was registered as Smith when his mother's name was Jones and she was unmarried with no father's name on birth cert.
