Well, the IGI has two sorts of records (as you can see from sablon's posts):
1) submitted by a member of the LDS Church
2) Extracted [...] record for the locality listed in the record

The former are variable in quality, just like trees you see on the web. However, unlike those trees, you only get to see a twiglet, so you can't form any impression of the quality of the underlying research.
Extracted records usually say where they're from. E.g.,

Source Information:
Batch No.: Dates: Source Call No.: Type: Printout Call No.: Type:
C007493 1720 - 1780 0990597 Film 6909608

If you click on the link "0990597" then you'll get to see:
Bishop's transcripts of Halifax Parish registers, 1600-1879 Church of England. Parish Church of Halifax (Yorkshire)

Here we also have:
Source Information:
Batch No.: Dates: Source Call No.: Type: Printout Call No.: Type:
C025088 Film

I don't know where these are from - they seem to be females only, from 1742-1812, probably from the Slaithwaite baptismal registery.

If one enters a batch #, like C007493, then the search will be restricted to only that one register (Halifax baptisms) in one block of time (1720 - 1780).
There is an (incomplete) listing of batch #s at:

Thank you both for all the info (and the PM's). I tried to stay on line for a couple of hours after I posted the query.

I must have been having a REALLY bad day, as I had forgotten about the IGI, although to be honest, I have at times been led up the garden path using info from this source. I think its getting better (the quality of the info), but I am still a little wary of it.

I will be trying the other links over the next few days, so we'll see where it all ends up.

Once again, thanks for the links and info.

There's a couple of options that can save a 20000 m round trip.
Firstly, you can find an LDS FHC somewhere nearer (there's one at Ipswich, e.g.) See:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

From the blue banner at top, select Search - Library Catalog - Place search for say Slaithwaite

Title Parish registers for Slaithwaite, 1679-1943
Authors Church of England. Chapelry of Slaithwaite (Yorkshire) (Main Author)
Notes Microfilm of original records, Registry of Deeds, Wakefield, Yorkshire.
High reduction (42x) microfilm. Use high magnification reader. (film #1542234)
Slaithwaite is a chapelry in the parish of Huddersfield. The chapelry also includes the township of Lingards which lies in Almondbury parish.
West Yorkshire Archives Service, Wakefield, call no.: D 120/1-8,11-12, 18-20

Clicking on the view film notes button at top right

Note Location Film
Baptisms 1684-1883 Marriages 1688-1745 Burials 1679-1812 FHL BRITISH Film 1542233
Baptisms 1883-1935 Marriages 1851-1916 Burials 1813-1943 Confirmations 1915-1930 FHL BRITISH Film 1542234

Now there's a problem - no marrs filmed in the interesting time, so lets check out the church's backup copy - the Bishop's transcripts

Title Bishop's transcripts for Slaithwaite, 1813-1869
Authors Church of England. Chapelry of Slaithwaite (Yorkshire) (Main Author)
Notes Microfilm of manuscripts in the Borthwick Institute, York, and at the West Yorkshire Archive Service, Sheepscar, Leeds.
High reduction (42x) microfilm. Use high magnification reader for film #'s 1849417 and 1849418.
Slaithwaite is a chapelry in the parish of Huddersfield.
For 1799-1802, 1804-1812 see Huddersfield. For 1780-1793 see Almondbury.
West Yorkshire Archive Service, Sheepscar call no.: RD/RR 292.

Note Location Film
Baptisms, burials, 1813, 1815-1837, 1839-1842. FHL BRITISH Film 990698 Item 1
Baptisms, burials, 1843-1851. FHL BRITISH Film 1849417 Item 7
Baptisms, burials, 1851-1869. FHL BRITISH Film 1849418 Item 1

Again missing, but they refer to other transcripts (no doubt due to Slaithwaite lacking a parish status).
So, you can chase around the catalog until you decide you'ld like to view film # 1234567, say.
Give your local LDS FHC a call, and they'll explain how to rent the film to view at the FHC.

The second alternative is to see if there are any published transcriptions or fiches available. Check:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/

Additionally, check:
http://www.hdfhs.org.uk/
It would seem that they do have something
http://www.hdfhs.org.uk/Posters/parishsales.pdf

The other places to check are the Borthwick Institute and Wakefield, which you can google.

ChrisinBrisbane Report 3 Aug 2009 01:29

New information to hand (for me anyway) shows that Thomas Lee (b 1765 d 25/10/1824) was married twice.

The first wife was Elizabeth Lunn (b 1763 d 1795) they had children Joseph John and Sarah.

Wife number 2 was Hannah Gledhill (b 1769 d 1801) and they had children Thomas and Samuel.

All this happened in Slaithwaite, Yorkshire and the info comes from gravestones in that village.

I am now after the parental details of these three people - but more particularly Thomas - but without being in Yorkshire (or even the UK) it makes it a bit hard to look at the parish registers for either Slaithwaite or Huddersfield (the adjacent town).

Is there someone out there who can help me out. I would really appreciate anything you can find for me.

Many thanks in advance
