Hi Janey

Well let's say John Scott plus his father Robert Scott are such common name I have had trouble with searches.

I did Scottish Census plus English Census. I found a Robert Scott who was born in 1834 and his wife Mary, children William, Ann, Margaret Robert born 1834 and Thomas. Born in Lanarkshire.

Then there is another Robert Scott wife Helen and children Jean, David, Helen, William and Robert born 1834 at Lanarkshire.

Then in 1851 census James Scott wife Elizabeth and children Robert born 1834 born Carluke Lanark, James, and Thomas.

Then in 1861 found English Census with Robert Scott born in Scotland now living in England with wife Betsy (who we feel is short for Elizabeth). and children William, Robert and Joseph. Robert was working at Spelter works as a labourer.

Then back to the Scotish Census, this same Robert Scott with wife Betsy and children Robert, Joseph, and John who was born in 1862
and wife and all children were born in Brampton Cumberland England. But they were now living in Maryhill Lanarkshire and his occupation was as a spetter Maker, which we feel is the same as an iron moulder. So really have no idea what is correct.

There are few others as well.

I looked on IGI and Found a John Scott who was baptised on the 8th July 1862 at Brampton Cumberland England, father Robert Scott and mother Elizabeth Unknown.

William baptised on the 28th March 1855 Brampton father Robert and mother Elizabeth Unknown

Robert baptised on the 17th June 1857 Brampton father Robert and mother Betsy Unknown

Joseph baptised on the 2nd September 1860 Farlam father Robert and mother Betsy Unknown

I also investigated the one you have on your reply where there are two John Scotts the one where you have this is a daughter it is suppose to be Janet as I found it on another census. This may also be correct.

Yes we thought the same thing if that is where he grew up that is where he thought he was born.

Again yes the people at the Victorian genealogy society said the exact same thing about the marriage certificate being more acurate.

So as you can see I am in a muddle.

Thanks for yoru help.

Actually, in 1861, there was one (correctly transcribed, anyhow) zinc worker in Scotland:

David Hamilton
abt 1828 Dunbar, Haddingtsh
Duns Berwickshire
Plumber Gasfitter and Zinc worker

And this one was a clerk in a zinc warehouse:

James McDonald
abt 1844 Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Glasgow Govan Lanarkshire

Checked 1871 and 1881 for zinc. None in 1871, and in 1881 there are 19 results, none of them Scott.

1871 Scottish census - the only John with these parents:

Name: Robt Scott
Age: 38
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1833
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Elisth
Where born: Renfrewshire, Scotland
Registration Number: 644/8
Registration district: Anderston
Civil parish: Glasgow Barony
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 9 East Vale Pl
Occupation: Selfactor Gendor

I have no idea what that's a mistranscription of, but I would think "Vendor" maybe. The originals can be seen at ScotlandsPeople for a fee.

Robt Scott 38
Elisth Scott 37
Robts Scott 17
Ann Scott 15
Mary Scott 13
John Scott 11 - this is a daughter, so the name is mistranscribed
John Scott 9
William Scott 2
James McQuante 18

Name: John Scott
Age: 9
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1862
Relationship: Son
Father's Name: Robt
Mother's Name: Elisth
Where born: Renfrewshire, Scotland

Your problem is time and distance. If he grew up in Glasgow, he may have believed he was born there.

Since he reported his father's name when he married, and someone else did it when he died, the name when he married might be more reliable.

On the other hand, he might not have known, or he might not be findable in a census with a parent. There are John Scotts in Glasgow in 1871 who are nephew, grandson, boarder, born 1861-2, and he could be any of them.

What searches have you done?

e.g. have you looked for him in the Scottish censuses, or looked for a marriage that matches either of those couples at ScotlandsPeople?

With the name John Scott, it wouldn't be an easy search, of course. ;)

By way of whether his parents also emigrated - were there zinc workers in Scotland? I have no idea! One of my gr-grfathers was a gold beater in Scotland. ;)

Just wondering whether that was a more likely occupation in Australia, and looking for the parents there might help.

I am trying to find out about my G/Grandfather John Scott. The information I have is taken from his Marriage Certificate. It states he was born abt 1862 and came from Glasgow. He immigrated to Australia but I do not know which state he landed at, He married Margaret Bennie on the 23rd May 1882 at North Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It stated that his Parents were Robert Scott who was a zinc worker and his mother was Elizabeth Edgar. John and Margaret were both 21 years old. John died in Essendon Victoria on the 2nd May 1940. Now comes the problem on his death certificate it also states he was from Glasgow and he was a builder, (also heard he was a builder in the Glasgow shipworks) It also states that his father was William Scott and his mother was Elizabeth Unknown. Any help would be greatly welcome.
Thanks Lynette
