Jim,
You're quite right. I don't know where I got that from; I can only assume it's because he was living in Winchester! St Maurice was where the Gauntlett family was living as well. I suppose they could have been close friends. Perhaps that's why Mary Ann was 'boarder' in 1881 but became an informal 'niece' by 1891.
Botheration!

Heather
Where have you found him "born Winchester"?

Thank you, Jim, but I guess it's his birth - with parents - I'm really keen to find.

Mary Ann was a Gauntlett. Her mother, whose relative he could also be of course, was Fanny Thompson although at 5ys old in 1841 she is obviously being brought up by her Cooper grandparents, while her mother and new Osman husband were staying there at the time.

Any of those names (except probably Thompson) could be the link.

This man's widow, Elizabeth, took in one of my gr grandfather's sisters after they were orphaned and, although Mary Ann was listed as 'boarder' in 1881, she was listed as niece in 1891. Her deceased husband's birthplace makes him the likely relative because all of Mary Ann's family was born in Winchester, going back for generations.

The widow, was born in Romsey, in 1881 it says 1824; in 1891 it says 1833.

Can anyone help please? I have not yet found any Jones in the Gauntlett family in spite of significant efforts.
