Jeanette

I think the local council will have details of the cottage and because its over 60 years ago they should be able to release them to you

It might be worth ringing the Brentwood council and asking...they should have an archives department

Glad we could help

Unfortunately I have no idea when it was constructed. In 1998 it was still standing, though it had been modified greatly and to it's old inhabitants wouldn't recognise it at all.
Spot on Ginny, with the Brentwood link. Thanks for that.

Have you any idea of its age?

Gosh that was quick. I'm into the social history side of the family story, and I wondered if I could find out how much it cost , and when she bought it. The family moved out to live in it during the war.
My father told me that when Grandad (Mums father) would put his money up on the mantlepiece, Nan would 'take' a bit here and there and used that money to buy the cottage. He also said that it was strange for a working class family to have a country cottage. I know tht it must have been pretty basic, no power or running water. Today it would probably be described as a shed.
I've visited the village and have a book called "Doddinghurst: A place in the Country". One of my cousins is in it, In a school picture.

In what way worth your while Jeanette?

If nan had the Deeds that would give the house's history.

Nan bought a 'cottage' in Doddinghurst pre WWII. Named Sunny Brae. Does anyone know if it wouod be worth my while to try to find out anything about title deeds/ownership details?
