Cadge Family of Long Melford, Suffolk 1800's

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Russell Report 7 Sep 2009 22:16

I would be grateful for any help that can be offered about the Cadge family. Mary Cadge bn 1816 in Long Melford, Suffolk was my GGGrandmother and married William Millie in Whitechapel, London 1839 - she was described as a Tailoress. I am very interested in the background of the Cadge Family in Suffolk.
Any snippets offered will be most welcome.

You may not know that your post is being read by a whole lot of non-related people - in fact, unless you're very lucky, only by non-related people.

If you're reading the Cadge "surname board", click at the top where it says "click here" to return to the complete Trying to Find board. That's where all us other loitering members see your post.

We're unrelated but might be able to help. Could you be more specific about what you're looking for, though?

Have you had a google for the name and Long Melford? Plenty of results plus interestingly lots of Cadges still living there.(Including a solicitors firm).

It seems Cage is a variation of the name

The family name of Cage is found at an early date in Laven-
ham. The will of Thomas Spring, " Clothmaker of Lauenh'm,"
has " I geve and bequeth to Petir Cawge myn apprentice x half
balye of woole." The will of Christian Spring, 1605, is witnessed
by a William Cage.

Russell Report 8 Sep 2009 15:13

Dear All

Can I thank each one of you who sent me information regarding the Cadge family of Long Melford. I was overwhelmed with the responses and it has given me much food for thought.
It is only recently that I found out about that family name in London, but its association with Suffolk - my county of birth, has started to open up a mystery that has bothered me most of my life spent here in the North East. My mother at 87 also from Suffolk and living in the North East area will be as delighted and impressed with this information too. Mary Cadge was her G Grandmother bn Long Melford and of whom she had no knowledge. In fact after spending a lifetime wondering...it will actually add something which is wonderful! I can't wait to tell her and I know she will thank you all too!
Now, of course, I will be seeking even more knowledge of ancestors and also descendants of the Cadge family - is this what happens?
I wish you all the very best.

Hi Russel, I am a lapsed member od Genes Reunited - I haven't been into it for about 5 years and having come back there are lots of changes for me to get used to.
It might interest you to know that my late mother was a Cadge and was born in Boxted, Suffolk in 1920. I have lots of info about the family which I am sure would interest you and I would be more than happy for you to view my tree - you may have to explain how I go about it from this window.

Kind Regards,
Stan Nicholls
