My father-in-law was Walter William Bell, born 1912, probably in Swaffham (Norfolk) and his father was John William Bell. Does anyone have any knowledge of his ancestry?

If you go to this site:
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
and search births for Walter Bell, dates 1912 to 1912 a birth in Newmarket will come up. This gives you his mother's maiden surname. You can then use the same site to find a marriage for his parents. Tip: don't put in middle first names as a lot of entries only have initials for these.

To go back further, you would really need to buy this marriage cert as it will give his parents' ages at marriage (to work out when they were born) and their fathers' names and occupations will help you to find them on the census returns.

If you order the cert from the GRO, you can use the father's name as a checking point.
