Could not see an obvious marriage for Edward and Ruth around the birth of Jane 1861.

However a marriage took place in Bethnal Green 1872 between Ruth A Hazell and Edward Miller.

There was also no birth record for a Jane Miller in Berkshire on free BMD, but there was a birth of a Jane Hazell registered March 1862 at Newbury

perhaps the parents weren't married after all?
That would explain her circumstances

Hi leba,

Its best not to rely on census information as with any written document what information is recorded is only what the people concerned are prepared to give! If you have doubts or family stories it is always worth doing a bit more digging.

Many families on the census I suspect were "not" married or the head of the family was not the father of all children, but his surname was used for all occupants. I have had quite a few entries when I know surname information is not true and the child was illegitimate.
