Sorry I couldnt help more. These 'Priests' are quite hard to track. My uncle was a priest too. I know the difficulties you are having.

I'll have a look tomorrow

The best of luck

Hi Ginny & Janey

Thanks for that; I confirm the info. you have is that of my ancestor. All the info. I have is from census info. which shows his occupation as a student. Even in 1911 he is recorded as a student. For info. Bootle Cumberland was the admin. centre that covered Millom.

He was still at home in the 1911 census, interestingly -- found him living in Bootle, then searched for all surname Harris living with Timothy Harris:

HARRIS ELIZABETH 1863 48 Bootle Cumberland
HARRIS MARY ELIZABETH 1886 25 Bootle Cumberland
> HARRIS WILLIAM THOMAS 1887 24 Bootle Cumberland
HARRIS HELENA 1889 22 Bootle Cumberland
HARRIS JOSEPH 1892 19 Bootle Cumberland
HARRIS AGNES 1895 16 Bootle Cumberland
HARRIS GREGORY 1897 14 Bootle Cumberland
HARRIS JOHN 1902 9 Bootle Cumberland
with
HARRIS TIMOTHY 1861 50 Bootle Cumberland

You could view the transcript/original to see what it says about his occupation - or edit your subject line to request a 1911 lookup, as a few people here now have a subscription.

Could give you some info about his early career, as one would have expected him to be in seminary or at a parish by the age of 24 - ?

Thanks Janey; you are correct Father Harris is a sibling of my Grandfather Daniel Joseph Harris. His parents were Timothy & Elizabeth Harris (nee Ferris). and again you are correct when you asssume I would like to know more about his career. I will check with the parish church as you suggest in due course but hope to find more info. about him/his career before I do that. Thanks again

Not to be indelicate ... but did you mean that William Thomas Harris was the sibling of one of your ancestors?

Presumably you know who his parents and siblings were; you're looking for info about his career?

The church has a website:

http://www.stceciliaschurch1957.org.uk/

and even has a message board. ;)

... Ah, I see that's where you were reading! - Parish History (Humble Beginnings) section.

Why not contact the parish?

One of my ancestors is a Fr William Thomas Harris who was born in Millom Cumbria 15/12/1886. Father Harris was the first permanent parish priest, installed on 18 December 1927, at the original St Cecilia’s Church, Corporation Road in Hendon. The building is still there today. It cost the princely sum of £1750, but it was not until December the following year that St Cecilia’s became a parish of Sunderland. I believe Father Harris was buried in Goforth but have no further details. I would love to find out more about my ancestor but realise that this may be a specialised research area. Anybody out there able to advise/help?
