Alfred Riley Thomas - Yorkshire

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

TheLadyInRed Report 10 Nov 2009 19:50

My grandfather Alfred Riley Thomas was born abt 1893 in Carlin How, Yorkshire to John and Hannah Thomas.
I've found him aged 8 in 1901 census at 24 Wood Street, Carlin How but I cannot find him in 1911. I know he was still alive as he married my grandmother in 1928.
His marriage cert shows him as a widower so I'd also like to find details of his first wife.
Ancestry shows someone with all of the siblings in his family tree but he hasn't logged into his account for over 6 months so no point trying to contact him.

The 1901 is more for our benefit. It gives us districts, names and occupations as well as birth years.

thanks to you both but as I said, I'd already found him in 1901. Just can't find him in 1911

The other kids answered to a search for Thomas born in Carlin How ... but not Alfred.

I wonder whether he was in the military?

Julia, there is no "but".

What *I* said was that unless *we* know the details from 1901 -- in particular, parents' and siblings names and ages -- we don't have what we need in order to do searches. There really is a reason why two of us posted that info, to make it available to anyone who could help.

I also wanted to know the registration district (I've never heard of Carlin How) because this is a guide when searching for a marriage.

JaneyCanuck - that's something that I should probably have thought of. I'll look at military records to see if I can find him there. I do know that by 1928 he was working on railways.
Many thanks

Why would there be no point in trying to contact the Ancestry member?

Ancestry sends email notifications of messags sent through its system. The user may not have logged on recently, but if he still has the email address he registered with, he would receive that notification.

Julia have a look at my previous answer. I've included him at the bottom.

JaneyCanuck - I didn't know that about Ancestry so very useful tip, thanks.

Alviegal - sorry but I saw your opening line where you said "no Alfred though" and afraid I didn't look at the following detail.

Going to search war records & go back to Ancestry now
