I am searching for the parents of Thomas Hill (c1819 - 1893). According to Thomas's marriage cert he was a parchment maker as was his father, also a Thomas. He was married to Catherine Boot in Bucks but the censuses show he was born in Bermondsey. He lived most of his married life in Hillingdon, Middx. I can find no relevant records of his birth as I have no idea of his mother's name. I wonder if anyone can help, perhaps by using the parchment maker clue. Many thanks.

Was he married before the 1841 census ? Was his father still alive on the marriage Certificate?

Are any of his children called Rosetta?

Scratch a Hill and you'll find Devon!

Parchment is made of sheepskin.

1841

Name: Thomas Hill
Age: 51
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1800
Relation: Head
Gender: Male
Where born: South Molton, Devon, England

Civil parish: Bermondsey
Registration district: Bermondsey
Sub-registration district: Leather Market

Thomas Hill 51 - tanner
James H Hill 19 - skinner - sons all born Bermondsey
David Hill 14 - tanner boy
William Hill 12

I strongly suspect that is your man - unfortunately widowed in 1851.

My grx2 grandfather was Francis Hill of Devon, with sons William and James. They are the John Smiths of Devon. ;)

For info, Thomas 1819 was in High Wycombe in 1841, where Catherine Boot was living with her mother Maria.

And the Hill household in St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey in 1841:

Thos Hill 40 - Laborer - not born in county
Mary Hill 40 - born in county
James Hill 9
George Hill 7
David Hill 5
William Hill 3

I would check out this birth.

Births Jun 1839
Hill William Bermondsey 4 20

If the parents are Thomas and Mary, you may have your people. It would match the 1851 age, but the 1841 age is probably more accurate, so the birth may not be in the GRO.

DAVID HILL
Christening: 30 JUN 1837 Saint Mary, Newington, Surrey, England
Father: THOMAS HILL
Mother: MARY REBECCA
Batch No.: C055632

Christened in a batch:

Hill, British Isles
Father: Thomas , Mother: Mary
Batch Number: C055632

1. GEORGE HILL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 30 JUN 1837 Saint Mary, Newington, Surrey, England
2. JAMES HILL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 30 JUN 1837 Saint Mary, Newington, Surrey, England
3. DAVID HILL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 30 JUN 1837 Saint Mary, Newington, Surrey, England

and lo and behold

THOMAS HILL
Spouse: MARY REBECCA ROGERS
Marriage: 20 AUG 1820 Saint Mary, Newington, Surrey, England

So the question then is -- was your Thomas Jr born before or after that marriage?

Just hoping to hear from meindoors ... and wondering whether we're related. ;)

THOMAS HILL
Christening: 25 DEC 1799 South Molton, Devon, England
Father: THOMAS HILL
Mother: MARGARETT
Batch No.: C052021

No guarantee of that being Thomas Sr, because of how Hills litter the Devon landscape, of course.

My James (father of Francis) was having kids c1820 in Tamerton Folliat and may have been from the overlapping Cornwall/Devon population/area around Plymouth, but I don't know.

I'm suspecting a brother here, in 1851 in St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey:

Name: James Hill
Age: 46
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1805
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Elizabeth
Where born: Tuckington (?), Devon, England
Occupation: Leather Dresser

James Hill 46
Elizabeth Hill 42 - born Newington, Surrey

A William Hill born c1801 in South Molton living in St Marylebone in 1851, a butcher, might also be a candidate for brother.

Ellen and Janey - thank you for responding.

Ellen - yes, married in 1841 and father still living at that time, and no, there is no daughter named Rosetta.

Janey - what great info, I will follow all the leads you have given.

I have been hitting my head against this wall for some time so, again, thank you very much.

Neat, eh?

I'd guess the butcher brother was the source of the skins for the tanner/leather dresser brothers. ;)

I meant to mention -- about the only sources for pre-1837 Devon records are the Devon Records Office and the Devon Family History Society.

www.devonfhs.org.uk

Click on the "Surnames" button and you can do searches -- but you will not find actual records, you will find indications of how many records thre are in a particular parish, e.g. Then you have to order a CD or printout and pay.

Devon has always been tight-fisted with their records, unfortunately.
