HI,

I am trying to find out more about my great great grandfather - JOHN HINCHCLIFFE WILLIAMS but have come to a sudden stop!

Here's what I already have on him -:

He was a tobacco manufacturer and I am wondering if he was living overseas in his younger years as I have lots of missing events for him.

Born c 1812 in London,Middlesex and died feb 8th 1869 in Croydon,surrey age 59
He was married to Elizabeth Mary born 1813 in West Indies,Barbados and died oct 31st 1864 age 64 which doesn't tally with her estimated birth date - age 54 would be closer.
These death dates were in the Croydon cemetery records at St Peters church where the Williams family vault is.

Their son JOHN ALEXANDER WILLIAMS (my grt grandfather) was born 12th oct 1846 and was christened in May 1847 at Newington, middlesex. They lived at York Place,Walworth at the time.

In the 1861 census John and Elizabeth are living at Selsdon Road,Croydon with 12 year old Louisa M.- born in 1849 in Camberwell.John's occupation- tobacco manufacturer. There is no John Alexander who would have been about 13 years old at the time.

In 1870 JOHN ALEXANDER married EMILY VIRTUE GRIFFIN at St Pancras,Camden where his father's occupation was recorded as being a tobacco manufacturer- deceased.

I have no idea who John H's parents were or his wife's maiden name. Hinchcliffe is an unusual name - maybe it was his mothers maiden name which he was given as his middle name. There are alot of John Williams in the system and a few John H's.If anyone can help out with this one I would be grateful as it's stumped me. I can find no record of his marriage as there are hundred of John Williams and without knowing what Elizabeths maiden name was it's hopeless. She was born in the West Indies where there was a tobacco industry in the 1800's but I dont know when she came to England .

If anyone can find anything else which may be relevant to John H Williams I would be so grateful

Thank you
Rosie

I wouldn't think that there are too many Hinchcliffe's about so this looks promising - thanks.
Anything else would be great x

On the IGI almost all of the Hinchliffes at the turn of the 18th/19th century came from Yorkshire so if the Elizabeth who was JHW's mother was a Hinchliffe thats the area to look at
