Find Ancestors

Hi,

I am looking for the marriage of JOHN HINCHLIFFE WILLIAMS to a ELIZABETH MARY. In the Croydon Cemetery inscriptions site John's middle name is spelt HINCHCLIFFE and MARY is MAY.

John was born to John and Elizabeth on 21 Jan 1811 and baptised on 16th May 1811 in Cripplegate. His first child John Alexander was born on 26th May 1847 so I'm guessing a date for marriage around 1840 - 46.

The only thing I know about Elizabeth is that she was born in the West Indies,Barbados c 1813. Apart from the grave inscription I cant find any relevant death record for either John or Elizabeth. In the 1851 census only John is shown with his children but in 1861 Elizabeth is with him.

I cant trace either John or Elizabeth in earlier census records - I dont know when Elizabeth came to England or her surname so its not too easy to look for her.

Any info on either would be great

John's date of death on the grave is feb 8th 1869 and Elizabeth's 31 st october 1864 but I am looking for records of them for the ref numbers.
The John in Gloucestershire is not my grt grt grandfather. x

What makes you so sure? Have you purchased the death cert to verify?

The year and qtr are correct.....................as is the age

Not sure why you haven't found the wife's death - it's the only one in that qtr on freebmd

Louisa has been wrongly corrected (is that possible?) on 1851 census at Ancestry. Someone has made her the daughter of the servant, Mary Clement. However as she's with her parents in 1861, and her brother in 1871 this is obviously not so.

Th1851 wasn't actually 'corrected' as far as I can see - I think the transcribers added the alternative surname, as the image is a bit ambiguous

I hadn't thought of J H W'S death as being in Gloucester shire but it might make sense cos he was a travelling tobacco manufacturer.He would have then been buried in Croydon in the Williams family vault along with Elizabeth.
Good job someones got their sensible had on!

Mary Clement in the 1851 census was a domestic servant and not a daughter of John or sister to louisa and John
