Certificates did not exist before July 1837

You may have the parish register - which seldom mentioned anything other than the names of the couple and the witnesses.

Some parish priests/vicars included extra detail, but not many

Only with the introduction of the Civil Registration system (GRO) in 1837 did the father's name appear on the documentation as a matter of course.

I bought the marriage certifcate from John Bennett and Susannh Hornby to confirm his parents. But it does not say alot and doesn't mention there names! Is this common?

Your first post - Was this the only John Bennett you found in Gloucestershire? And where did you find him?

Your second Post - This looks like One of John Bennett's son's, I have another son called Abel Bennett - was there a mention of any other children?

I am trying to find out the parents of John Bennett born c1755. I believe he was married to Susannah Horby born c.1755. If anybody can find a record of there marriage or any details on his parents I would really apreciate it.
