I'm still in the dark about my Grandfather's First World War Records,
his name is Charles Roberts born 1896 at Llynclus Hill Llanyblodwell Oswestry in Shropshire.
I would like to know which regiment he served in, he was a sergeant, had a horse and was a prisoner of war.
When I was a child I remember seeing a letter from the King stating he was missing believed killed although it turned out later he had been taken prisoner.

A lot of these letters were sent out with the wrong information and I imagine the families were very relieved when the information they contained turned out not to be true.

Hello Brian

Right i have had a good look at the WW1 pension and service records on Ancestry, but i cannot see anything that would be considered a possibility for your Charles.

As you may know over 70% of these records were destroyed so it always a bit of luck if a particular soldiers records survived.

Looking at the medal cards there are so many records at least 300 relating to a Charles Roberts that it is nigh on impossible to identify one that would belong to Charles without knowing his regiment and service number. These records give only a name ,rank, regiment , service numbers.

I have started to look through these records on a basis that he may have served in a regiment local to his residence/ place of birth IE The Shropshire Light Infantry, again there are many which you have to view one by one to see if one has the rank of sergeant, but even then there is no guarantee that if one is found, it would be him without a service number.

Not much help i know but i will continue to look if i can see anything that looks right.

George

Thanks George

I have heard from my mother that he may have been in the Kings Dragoon Guards who are now called The Queens Dragoon Guards, not 100% sure about this though.
