She was Mary Ann James, AoGG. ;)

I checked for a marriage in England, but they must have married in India.

FIBIS records tend not to be very good into the 20th century.

The database there has four William Clarke marriages after 1900, but none to Mary James.

Vicky, you don't have names for the sons, I guess?

Any more info about the parents? If they were born in England and had siblings, for instance, it might be possible to find family members.

AoGG ... someone born in 1840 wasn't very likely to be having kids in 1920 ...

Both names are unfortunately very common. The GRO index has numerous records for both in the 1890-1905 range, e.g.

Maybe Vicky will come back with some more info if she has any.
