sorry if i have confused anyone. my mother in law was 74 on 27/11/2009
she was born 27/11/1935. on her birth certificate her birth address in 1 old church road romford but her mothers address is 34 cavenham gardens essex it also states that her mother was working as a green grocers assistant there is no mention of a father but i recieved a lovely email from a family that lived in romford claiming that 1 old church road was a work house and then became a hospital and never a private dwelling but i have found a couple of cox family members listed as living in that address and also matching the names of people listed on a war memorial in romford it self thanks again for looking

Julia may..

If you go to ,,freebmd,,,you will see her birth reference.
Take 74 from 2009 as Mike in his first post says that she is 74 so she was born circa 1935/36 and the birth reference has her mothers maiden name as Cox ,the same as her birth surname.
Which more often than not means born out of wedlock.
He mother may have married another Cox before her birth ,but I doubt it,there is no marriage ref for one anyway.
It would also seem that she has her original birth cert with no father on it,the way I read it.

So just how old is Gwynneth Kathleen? What year was she born?
I might be missing something but how do we know for sure that she was illegitimate? If she was placed for adoption at 18months then her mother had obviously tried to care for her up to then. Could it be that the father died or parents separated which is why she ended up in that situation?

Sharon

I fail to see how that can be the mothers marriage as Gwynneth/now Mary, was born Illegitimately and her birth record has Cox as her birth name and Cox as the mothers maiden name.

Mike,

It maybe worth trying to contact the owner of this site;

http://www.calkin.co.uk/butler030.html

Apparentley his Grandparents lived at 33 Cavenham Gardens Hornchurch Essex for many years. I'm hoping that is the correct Cavenham Gardens, interestingly his Grandfather died at Oldchurch Hospital.

I am just a bit confused about her year of birth. You say she is 78 years old, so she should have been born 1931.

Are you sure the 1936 certificate is the right one, it would make her 73.

Incidentally there is a 1931 birth for the same name but in a different area.

So sorry about that - didn't notice the "institution" bit. Cavenham Gardens it is then.

Hi Mike,

It looks like Oldchurch Road Romford was a workhouse in the early part of the century and then became a hosptital.

Not sure if this helps, but in 1911 tthis man was living at 1 Oldchurch rd:

COX HENRRY M 1847 64 Romford Essex

Surely some kind of relative? You must check this address out - let us know how you get on. I would look at all the electoral registers if it were me.

Michael, Sorry for the question, but not sure why the adoption record matters - from what you say, your mother-in-law knows her real name and her mother's name, also address, which is all she needs to make a start isn't it?
Sorry if I'm misunderstanding the whole thing.

Dee is right, if you haven't already, get those electoral register details.

Hi Mike,

aaww bless.... your poor mother in law must be pulling her hair out, I am not really great in this area, however I think I would want to do an electrol roll look up for 1 Oldchurch Road in 1936..... this may give you the names of the people living there at the time Gwynneth/Mary was born......the same for 34 Cavenham Gardens in 1937.

You will need to contact the local libraries to the areas to do this, they may charge..... but if there is something to find it maybe worth it.

The sincerest and warmest wishes to your mother in law and good luck with your search, Dee xx
