Thanks Mavis but there is no alteration within the censuses as I have already checked so I have applied for a birth certificate which I should have done all along. There was no harm in trying though.

There is always the chance he may have had two wives called Mary Ann ?

if you find them through the censuses does the Mary Ann's age or place of birth alter within the censuses !!!!!

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think the "royston" name was too late and the 7 year gap certainly creates a mystery. I think the time has come to invest in a birth certificate.

Thank you once again and sorry I was late in replying.

There is a 7 year gap between children. Perhaps she married later than you think

Hi Angela
Can only find this birth for Mary Ann 1852

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Mar 1852 (>99%)

BAKER Mary Ann Royston 3a 196

There is nothing for Colchester

The only Mary Ann Parker I can find was born in Rochford

You could also see if you can find your Mary Ann - born 1832 in Colchester - by trying all of those possible surnames ...

Have you tracked the happy couple through every census possible? They might well have Mary's mum or dad staying with them at some point.

Alternatively, check all their children - sometimes they go and stay with their grandparents. I've found a few in-laws that way over the years.

There is a possibility that William had a child called William who was born and died in 1848 in Colchester but I don't know how true this is which is why I didn't mention it before.

Andrew

Andrew Report 6 Dec 2009 13:58

William appears to to living with his parents in 1851 census, so that rules out the 1848 marriage

I would rather find out the cheaper way if there is one!!
I realize that a birth certificate is probably the only way but I thought a try was worth it.

If you buy one of William's children's birth certificates the mother's maiden name will be on it. To be certain you should buy two or three certs.

My relative William Baker born c1830 in Rochford Essex was married to a Mary Ann born c1832 in Colchester Essex. The trouble is, I have found 3 possible ladies with different maiden names.
1. Appleby married in 1848 J/A/S in Lexden Essex
2. Parker married in 1851 O/N/D in Royston Essex
3. Turner married in1852 J/A/s in Colchester Essex

Is it possible to find which one is correct by William's children?
They are;
Mary Ann born 1852 Colchester Essex
William John born 1854 Middlesex
Frances Maria born 1855 Dartford Kent
Ambrose Henry born 1862 Dartford Kent
Maria Offord born 1864 Dartford Kent
Emily Offord born 1867 Dartford Kent
Emmeline Agnes born 1869 Dartford Kent

Can anyone help me to sort out this problem?

Angela
