Pauline in your other thread you refer to the names Muir and something else. Is this two different searches you are doing?

In both cases you really need to say more if someone is to help you. The chance that anyone who reads this will recognise the names is very very low. Other members may be able to help you but first you need to give all the information you already have and say what you are looking to find out.

If you see a line at the top of the Trying to Find board that says something like 'to list the entire trying to find board click here' then that is because you are looking at a board for a single surname. But everyone else is looking at the entire board so if you click there you will see how your posts appear among all the others and get separated.

Where did these people live and what is their relationship to you and what is the source of your information please?

'bridget whittington/ michael whittington 1873' does not make sense to an outsider for example. Were they married or were they brother and sister etc?

Also proofreading and accuracy helps, he was not Michael Whittington

but if you do not know what these people are to you why are you investigating them?

You can find those marriages at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and buy credits to view the original documents which will give the names of the parents of the bride and groom.

There is also a related thread on the Surname Information board

http://www.genesreunited.com.au/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1195019

so there is just too much risk of people spending time on searches that have already been done

bruce thanks for this information. i believe these people to be my ggparents. i have also checked the next msg you sent but i have not heard of hugh o brien so i am a bit lost now. i will try to find out. i dont understand what 5 mo means?

thank you for providing this info to me. now i must try to place them in some sort of order that will make sense and that will help on my fathers side. unfortunately, my mother is dead and i never knew any of her family personally. my father provided me some names but alas i do not know my grandfather age only name clark.
this has been so difficult with very few people to in my life to confirm.

thanks anyway.

Start with your father's birth certificate - this will give you his parents' names.

Then, look for their marriage. This should give you their ages plus their fathers' names and occupations.

Work your way back one generation at a time - proving it as you go with certs and baptisms etc. Don't try and leap back two or three generations with just a muddled collection of names.

Take your time - the muddled collection of names will slot into place as you work your way back.

1901
James Obrien 22
Helen Obrien 28
Hugh Obrien 5 mo

You had asked about James O'Brien and Helen Barrett and I think this is them?

Hugh is their son, 5 months old.

He may not have survived early childhood and that could be why you had never heard of him. Unfortunately Scotland is not releasing the 1911 census anytime soon so the household makeup then can't be checked.
