If the person registering his death was not aware of his correct forename - this is a possibility

Name: Frederick A T Davies
Death Registration Month/Year: 1957
Age at death (estimated): 55
Registration district: Stockport
Inferred County: Cheshire
Volume: 10a
Page: 553

It is normally thought that 'Fred' is an abbreviation....................

Dear Freewheel
Thanks so much for this information - I will send for the certs and see if I get a match. As you say an unusual combination of names and I also thought he was a Frederick til I found his birth record. The second entry looks the stronger possibility as its nearer the correct age so will start there.
regards
Linda

P.S.
Have just eliminated the first ref. by checking the birth record and neither the place or reg. nor the mother's maiden name fit. fingers crossed for the second ref.
