Also ruled out the ones who died in 1922 (born in NSW) and the one who died in 1937 (born in the 1850s)- https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/214838278

The one who died in 1934 was born c1881 and appears to be the son of the Thos who died in 1937 - he had brothers Andrew & Herbert, several sisters and mother was Mary- Forbes district (reg 23475)

According to his WWI enlistment, he was born in Armidale NSW though.

Nice work! :-)

That also explains why Elsie's death reg in 1892 aged 18 shows her parents as Samuel & Elspet (reg 5915).

Now we just have to hope Cindy comes back :-D

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 24 Jan 2019 15:15

I think Ann Gordon was Samuel's second wife - marriage after births of Alexander and Elsie..

This is his first marriage - Elspeth as you mentioned above:

GILL
SAMUEL
BISSET
ELSPET
1872
235/ 5
Rathen

Children of Samuel and Elspet(h) were :

Catherine Scott Gill 25/09/1872,
Elsie 21/09/1874
and Alexander as already posted.

I don't see young Ann's birth with any certainty - there are a few possibilities.
She would have been second wife Ann's child.

Elspet's death:

BISSET (also listed as Gill)
ELSPET
27
1880
168/1 1036
St Nicholas

So Samuel's wives were Elspet Bissett and Ann Gordon.
His parents were Samuel Gill and Elizabeth Ogston.

FYI children of Alexander Robertson GILL & Elizabeth eldest 5 born in Ballina district and youngest in Casino district.

Annie Elizabeth b. 1902, d. 1977
Minnie C b. 1903, d. ?
Leslie A. b. 1907
Gladys Elspeth b. 1910
Alexander R. b. 1913, d. 1913
Evelyn b. 1916, d. 1960

Elizabeth died in January 1916 in Casino district, so seems likely she died in childbirth with Evelyn.

Evelyn GILL married Frank WOODHOUSE in 1936 (reg 14530) and died in 1960 (reg 7782), shown as daughter of Alexander Reberson and Elizabeth. It's possible she was fostered out as a baby given the situation.

Annie married Michael Wm GUTHRIE in 1923 (reg 7666). She died in 1977 (reg 106665).

Minnie married Matthew EWING in 1925 (reg 1566). History repeated when she also lost her husband at age 38... https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/16906506

Gladys married Robert George CRAM in 1928. Sadly he also died relatively young,
in 1949:

Cherilyn Report 24 Jan 2019 12:11

If the Alexander that ArgyllGran found is the right one ( :-) ), then Samuel & Ann GILL had another son George G in 1886 in Central Cumberland district of NSW soon after arriving (reg 18489).

Sadly he died in Parramatta in 1887 (reg 7359).

Interestingly there is a death of a Samuel GILL that same year, also in Parramatta - and his parents are given as Samuel and ELSPETH (reg 8773).

This from the Cumberland Mercury, 24 Nov 1886:
A MAN named Samuel Gill, aged 37 years, died in the Hospital yesterday morning of stonemason's phthisis.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/248797810

This fits the timeline perfectly...

An Annie Gill is listed as living in Francis Street, Rookwood in 1890.

Do you have Alexander's marriage certificate? I'd suggest you start there. If the parents names are correct then I'd be inclined take a punt and order Samuel's death certificate. It should list wife, children and time in the colony.

Cindy Report 23 Jan 2019 04:33

My sister and I are stuck on finding anything on Samuel Gill our great great grandfather and his wife.

His son Alexander Robertson Gill married Elizabeth Bender....In NSW.

They had our grandmother Elspeth Glafys Gill.. My nan and her siblings were left orphaned. Their mum died first then their dad died some time later leaving a son Les and daughters Annie, Minnie, and our Nan at get young age

Alexander and Elizabeth are buried at the old cemetery at Woodburn, NSW, Australia.

Any help would be really appreciated.

On Alexander death cert it gives Samuel for his dad but no Mum is named. Death for Alex was 1923.

Okay I've been snooping around and I can see there is a claim that Thomas Alfred STEARN changed his name to WEST and went from Victoria to WA.

And there is a death reg for an Alfred WEST in Murray district in 1945 (reg 34).

But there are a few things that don't add up. Firstly although some of his notices say Thomas William Alfred WEST (his eldest son's name - above tree has him as Alfred), he was 87 when he died, making him born c1858, not 1867 - a significant difference! Was he actually 78? https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/51765973

The births of his children with Bridget Ann NEVILLE (b. 1874) all show him as simply Alfred WEST. Bridget had been previously married to Hugh McALEER in 1889 (reg 3333); he died in 1891.

He and Bridget are both at Dwellingup cemetery - he is as Thomas Alfred WEST
http://www.ozburials.com/CemsWA/Murray/dwellingup.htm

Bridget's death and funeral notice: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/49064346

Do you have his marriage and/or death certificate?

A few gaps filled in -
Collie Cemetery
MCGOWAN , Myrtle Marion. 24 May 1976. Aged 82 years. Anglican O.30 (husband George Alexander is also there)
http://www.ozburials.com/CemsWA/Collie/c_mike.htm

Thomas William Alfred WEST's death notices - 1938 as Alfred, reg as Thomas Wm Alfred
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/41662242
He is at Dwellingup Cemetery too (as Alf I assume)

William Snowling WEST died in 1969 aged 63 (reg 866). Possibly the Bill WEST at Dwellingu cemetery.

PS Funny coincidence as my husband's direct paternal line were in Holyoake in the early 1900s too!

Is this your tree, Ellen?
https://www.genealogy.com/ftm/d/o/n/Martin-Donnellan-Victoria/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-0109.html

If so there is an error for Ann's death (known as Annie). She married and had children in Victoria around the Wangaratta area. She died in Beechworth, Victoria in 1958 aged 89 - error for mother's name. I notice her place of birth given is the same as for Wm jnr's.

Registration number 26315
Registration year 1958
Family name JOHNSON
Given names Annie
Sex Female
Father's name STEARNE William
Mother's name Annie (Unknown)
Place of birth MULWALA NEW SOUTH WALES
Place of death BEECHWORTH
Age 89

You may be able to find out more here:
https://www.beechworthcemetery.com.au/family-history-research.html

Also there is no record of Thomas Alfred STEARN's death in WA as noted on the above tree.
