If you want to go furher back you would need to order josephs marriage certificate. I can't trace him before the 1871 census and no births seem to be registered in the Barnsley Reg District between the years of 1845-1851, however registration wasn't firmly compulsive until 1875.

I have found Ellen Lomas, the surname has been corrected by someone on Anc*stry... it was recorded as Mayo??

Going back to the marriage cert, it will confirm both their fathers names and their occupations, often the witnesses were family members too.
