Please can anyone see my grandfather on the free look up facility. He was called Herbert Holgate born 1902, I think in Thorne near Doncaster in Yorkshire. I've tried as many options as I can think of, but to no avail!
Thank you so very much, from Beryl

Beryl, have you got his marriage cert? it would help to have his father's name.
If you are unsure of his birthplace, have a care, there are a couple of possible herberts around!

Hello Brummieann and thank you for replying. I haven't got Herbert's certificate but I do know his Dad was Richard Holgate and his Mum was Sophia Holgate from Thorne.

Thank you, from Beryl

You know, I would be tempted to get his marriage cert - nice to have and would establish his age.
I wouldn't be surprised if he were older than you think - this must be his parents' marriage (if your info is correct of course!!):

Marriages Jun 1878 (>99%)
Barley Sophia Thorne 9c 848
HOLGATE Richard Thorne 9c 848
MASON Alfred Thorne 9c 848
Stones Penelope Thorne 9c 848

Hello Brummiejan (sorry I called you Ann last night, sorry!).
Yes, that's Herbert Holgate's parents marriage. I've just double checked on free bmd for Herbert's birth year and it is 1902 and I know on his headstone when he died in 1984 he was 82 years old. I know he had much older sisters too.
Having said all that I just couldn't find him on the 1911 index.
I sincerely am grateful for all your time and help, thank you from Beryl

I would buy his birth cert if I were you because as there were older daughters it's possible he was a child of one of them.

There's something strange if they supposedly only had 4 children as stated in 1911.

According to the 1881 they were born earlier too.

Personally I would get his marriage cert first - you re sure about that I imagine, and his age and father's name will be there to narrow down his birth.

Hello Christine and Brummiejan,
Sorry I'm only just getting back to you (I've had a full day out with my daughter and granddaughter!)
Thank you for taking the time to do look ups for me.
The 1881 census shows a Stephen Barley and I think he was probably Sophia's brother as her maiden name was Barley.
The 1891 census shows 4 daughters and my mum remembers them as her Aunts.
The 1901 census is a mystery to me. I'm certainly going to take both your advice and buy the certificates because I think there's some more research to be done on this one and it's come right out of the blue!
Thank you again ladies, take care from Beryl x
