The marriage cert was issued in England and gives only the father's name as 'John Ritchie' & his rank or profession as 'deceased'.

Can you refresh my memory please? Did John give an occupation for his father John (deceased) on his marriage certificate please. I know Scottish certificates still give the father's occupation even if he is deceased.

I have researched all John Ritchie whose year of birth was 1865-1867 born Aberdeen with father John Ritchie and concluded he was the one you have all identified in the 1871,1881,1891 & 1901 census's (mother Bathia Balfour Duthie).
Further research shows this to be incorrect as he died (08.08.1942) in Arbroath still married to Margaret.

I based his year of birth (1866) on his age given as 45 on the 1911 census entry for Barnstable, Devon. I am pretty sure this is my John because in 1912 he married Elizabeth Ellen Williams in Newton Abbot, Devon. Curiously he gave his age on the marriage cert as 40 which would mean he was born in 1872.

I am now trying to find John Ritchie with father John Ritchie born in Aberdeen in 1872. Any help would be much appreciated!

The 1912 marriage cert gives John’s father as John Ritchie, deceased.
The 1911 census gives John’s birthplace as Scotland, Aberdeen.
Given that John’s year of birth was 1866 (based on the 1911 census entry) I viewed all the entries for John Ritchie born in that year in Statutory Births and he was the only one whose father was John Ritchie.
Mother: Bathea Balfour Duthie.

On the 1912 marriage certificate what is the name and occupation of John's father? Where did you get the information that John and Bathea were his parents? Have you just looked for a John Ritchie of the correct year of birth on the census records? What records do you have that give his place of birth other than just Scotland (as in the 1911 census)?

Had a couple of pm's this afternoon from Hugh

John Ritchie you have listed seems to be the one. In fact at this stage I'm trying to find more info on his youngest son John age 4 in 1871 which would tie in with his date of birth being 1866. John the youngest could be my grandfather but all I know is that in 1911 census he was in Barnstable, Devon and then in Newton Abbot in 1912 where he married and had a daughter. I cannot trace him before or after these dates. Any suggestions?

In 1871, the parents were born in Rosehearty, Mary in Fraserburgh, and the rest in Pitsligo. I'm not sure who Mary's parents were - the IGI shows the rest are John + Bathia's kids.

You quote their 1866 addy - I presume this is from John's b.cert.
Do you have John & Bathia/Bethia's 1861 m.cert - I presume this shows the parents as John + Catharine Ritchie MS Scott and John + Elizabeth Duthie MS Downie What is John`s marital status on the m.cert?

Father John Ritchie, the cooper, is easy to find. I think someone (possibly the enumerator) got muddled between John & William in 1841. The IGI gives their dobs as 2/8/1837 (Jno) & 4/3/1839 (Wm) batch#=c112336.
John Duthie is probably at sea, but Bathia is easy to find.
I had heard that Elizabeth and Beatrix were occassionally synonyms, but hadn't ever seen this.

The IGI does have a submitted death (10 JAN 1865 Pitsligo, Aberdeen, Scotland a=66) for a Beatrix Downie d/o George + Margaret Downie MS Ritchie. One wonders if this info was gotten from a d.cert.
