BLEACH WORKS IN SHARPLES BOLTON

My g.ggrandfather Thomas Hall died 27th May 1857 age 36 he was a mechanic and worked in a bleachworks and had an accident, on his death certificate cause of death reads - ulceration in the throat 5 months - how do I find the name of the bleachworks?

Hi. Are you sure he worked in Bolton? There used to be a bleachworks in Wigan and that's quite near to Bolton. Just a thought... Cx.

Hi Sandra,
I live in Bolton, but not very near to Sharples. There were lots of mills and bleachworks in the area. If you try Wikipedia, there is some info on there. Another good site is boltonmuseums.org. Bolton library may be able to help you as well.
I'm not sure if the original building hasn't recently been converted to apartments, but don't quote me on that.

No I'm not sure but as he lived in Astley Bridge Sharples I assumed he worked there.

Hi Sandra,
Astley Bridge and Sharples are still quite busy areas of Bolton today, I think it's probable he would have worked close to where he lived.

I have contacted Bolton Council and they tell me there were at least seven bleach works in Astley Bridge around the time of his death.
