It all fits nicely now Jeanne, so I think it is safe to say that James Davis was the daughter of Elizabeth Gascoigne and James Davis.
All you need to know now is what happened to them both and what happened to their daughter Elizabeth Davis born in 1830?
I know that there was a cholera epidemic in the 1830s in Sunderland so could be they all died in that but that's just an idea!

He appears with ancestors of mine on the 1841 and 1851 census records, i.e. Margery Gascoigne and her granddaughter Hannah Christian Scarth (1845) My maiden name is Scarth, but I don't know where the
Davis family fits into my tree. I should be grateful to view your tree.
