It would help to know WHEN she was born - and her birth surname

Christine

Christine Report 24 Mar 2010 16:08

Her birth surname was Innes she was illegitimate and then her name was changed to Clark 22nd July 1883
But cannot find anywhere a marriage or death.

So when was she born?

We can't work it out for ourselves - sorry

How do you know so precisely when the name 'changed'?

Christine

Christine Report 24 Mar 2010 16:11

We have managed to find out that there were a couple of other children she had other than my father in law but all had different fathers. My father in law was born 20th March 1902 in Elgin and alleged father was a William Shanks but they were in the poor house when dad was about 3 yrs old

Christine

Christine Report 24 Mar 2010 16:12

No that was her date of birth sorry did not put that in very well.

Christine

Christine Report 24 Mar 2010 16:14

We also know that she was bought up by her grandparents which would fit in with 1891 census. Her real father was killed in a fishing accident in 1901 the year before my father in law was born

Flick Report 24 Mar 2010 16:19

Ok - got it now!

What was your father-in-law's surname at birth?

(My birthday's 20th March, although a little more recent!)

Christine

Christine Report 24 Mar 2010 16:21

His surname was Clark William Dean

Flick Report 24 Mar 2010 16:26

So IF Constance married, it would have been after 1902.

Were the other children younger - or older?

And were they also born out of wedlock?

There isn't a death for her as Clark in Bedfordshire - but there are so many 'ifs' that it may prove impossibile to find anything

Christine

Christine Report 24 Mar 2010 16:32

She left Scotland about 1922 the other children were younger and they were born out of wedlock. All of the children stayed in Scotland with either guardians or foster parents. My father in law came down to London with the Scots Guards and married my mother in law in London and then moved up to Brandon in Suffolk where they had eleven children. 7 boys and 4 girls.

Anything is possible - do you know when anyone last had contact with her?

Was she still known as Clark in 1922?

Christine

Christine Report 24 Mar 2010 16:40

No last anybody can find out is when she left Scotland and as far as we are concerned she was still known as Clark. I have had contact recently with someone from Scotland and he has come up against a brick wall after 1922.

I does seen strange that she was not far away from Jock and his family if she was in Bedford.

He never returned to Scotland.
