Old Threads....

I am continually mildly annoyed at the large number of Old threads there are on this Board....You see something that you think you can help with and then find its dated 2005......which really does add weight to my argument that this board is not serving much purpose, and can waste a lot of time..
I've bleated on about this elsewhere!!

Yes I saw it.

But of course there is always the same option as when you dont like something on radio or TV.
You can turn off or turn over !

Those old threads that so annoy you Derek might be of great help to someone in the future. Some of the threads have been researched for hours by numerous people and are very intricate and involved. If, therefore that information was deleted and in a couple of years time someone came along with the same family query then it would have to be researched all over again. Waste of everyone's time when the thread which you want to delete contains all of the information just ready and waiting!

I spend as much time as anyone in intricate searche through parish records and trips to Records Offices totally free and at my own expense both in time and money.
I don't see too many people on this Board returning to their threads to see how much work has been done on their behalf...The OLD Threads I mean...
Your argument is invalid because the threads I'm moaning about haven't HAD an answer in years...and then some kind soul puts an answer on it years later..and another kind soul then says sorry old thread..
I didn't expect to be criticised fvor making a perfectly valid point!!

No idea why old threads bother anyone. I do think the date should be highlighted so people are more likely to notice it.
I personally was contacted by a family member because I had a very old thread on here, so don't knock it!

I have to agree with Jan

& also don't forget the History, TTF & Surname boards never used to be threaded & the only way to access them was ( except TTF) if you had those surnames in your tree

I for one always have gone and checked my old threads {Ive been using the boards since 2003 }and three years ago i put a thread on one board and three days ago some one answered me from Australia and there's a 98 percent that they are part of my Great gran ma's family ,so I say waste of time ??noooooo way.Jean.

I agree Astra

I am new to this site somewhat and i found alot of the old threads very interesting and even helpful. Dont delete them as I am sure there are people in a few years that are wanting to find the information and will find is very useful in their searches.

Derek,

The one thing you are maybe not aware of is the fact this site has been overhauled many many times and the consequence of that is the 'old' 'abandoned' threads you mention.

Back in the day you could not reply, as you can today, directly onto a thread, you had to PM the person concerned. the threads themselves were just random posts in their own right listed in date/time order. you could not add anything to them, kinda bulletin like.

The threaded boards you see today are relatively new and only date back a few years....so for new people like you the site seems bulky and pointless. For me i agree with the others, i have posts on here for many years that are stil recieving replies.... indeed i have posted on threads here from years ago and the person concerned has now found new data, or the information they required has only just been found, they then post onto their thread and up it pops on my threads..... i then recieve closure. All of these threads as has been mentioned are important to people here for various reasons.

If you don't like the old threads just ignore then, for me they are part of a site that i have been a member of since possibly 2003/4 and are part of who we all are today!!

How do I look for possible threads about any of my relatives before I joined GR please?

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 9 Apr 2010 09:30

If you click on a board - Trying to find, History, Surname information - you can fill in a surname. You can then just search away!
