Hi Linda,

Do you think you could give a surname as any help cant be given to establish family ties to these people without one.

Dea

Dea Report 5 Apr 2010 07:47

Strangely Patricia, there is a district called Bradford actually in Manchester.

I come from the local area (Salford) myself and only discovered this quite recently.

Bradford is a district and electoral ward in the city of Manchester, England. It is two miles (3km) northeast from Manchester city centre. Recently the area has sometimes been known as Eastlands. Bradford has, for many years been an economically deprived area[1] but it has undergone regeneration with the building of the City of Manchester Stadium which hosted the 2002 Commonwealth Games and is now home to Manchester City F.C.. Bradford is neighboured by Beswick to the west and the two areas are sometimes referred to as Bradford-with-Beswick. The River Medlock and the Ashton Canal both run through Bradford

A quick run through freebmd isn't bringing up any obvious matches for :-
1. marriage of Thomas Manchester to an Ellen Jane ***
2. deaths of Manchester children, Nellie, James Stanley, Harold
So I'm inclined to think Manchester is not the surname.

Will have to wait for Linda to respond.

Can you give the approximate birth dates for the children, so we can try and find his marriage, as one to ellen jane not yet appearing?
Thanks

You can't view the cert unfortunately - you would have to buy it from GRO.

I think the price has just gone up to £9.25?

Dear Linda,

Sorry Linda, no body is actually answering your question...HOW to find for yourself.

For finding more information on each individual, you can buy the certificates of birth, marriage or death. The best place to buy these from is the GRO (General Register Office), which is the on-line government website at www.gro.gov.uk

BUT...before you order you will need to give the reference details of each person, and you get these from the indexes. Some of these reference details have been given to you already, and look like this (here are 2 which Patricia gave you)...
---------------------------
Is this Nellie?
Births Jun 1915
MITCHELL Nellie Terrell Prestwich 8d 775

Deaths Mar 1923
MITCHELL Nellie 7 Prestwich 8d 455
------------------------------------

What the reference numbers mean...let's take the first one....
Births Jun 1915
MITCHELL Nellie
Terrell
Prestwich
8d
775

Jun 1915 (this is the year and quarter in which the birth was registered. Births deaths and marriages are registered in 4 quarters, not by the month). So it means that Nellie was born in 1915 and her birth was registered in the quarter 'April May and June'.
MITCHELL Nellie (self explanatory).
Terrell. (birth indexes after 1911 show the mother's maiden name).
Prestwich (is the registration district in which the birth was registered).
8d (is the district's 'area code', for want of a better description, and this refers to the Volume or Book in which the birth entry is found,
775 (the page within the volume, on which the entry was made).

So, when you apply for a certtificate you will need to give them that information.

Now , How To Find that information? Well, you can search in a few places, but here's one where you might like to have a go yourself, (for free) go to www.freebmd.org.uk and go into Search.

Next, To work further back...well you now have been given some of the information, so let's take Thomas Mitchell who married Ellen Jane Terrell, ie they married in 1906....
Marriages. Dec 1906
MITCHELL Thomas. Prestwich. Volume 8d. page 600
TERRELL Ellen Jane. Prestwich. Volume 8d. page 600
If you sent for their marriage cert you would get a little more information on each of them, ie how old they were when they married, their fathers names, and this would help you work back on those 2 families, the MItchells and the Terrells.

For starting an on-line tree, there are plenty of free sites around, and many people us the GR Tree, (though personally I don't find it that great). You might like to take a look at Tribal Pages and start a tree (for free) on there, it's pretty straight forward and once you start filling in the tree with the information you have, it gets more interesting watching it grow.

Good luck

P.S.
I should have said that it's a great idea to look at some of the other Boards on here, especially Tips where you will pick up a lot of information and learn loads about how to do your family tree, including what sites are the best to subscribe to (for census information etc) and which ones you can get information for free etc.

You can learn a lot from these boards.
I wouldn't have got anywhere much with my tree if I hadn't joined GR and read the information to give me a good start. Plus, of course, there are always people here willing to help out.
