Trying to find information on my g-g-grandmother, Jane Parker, who was born in Cambridge, England around 1845. Parents were William Parker and Jane Sharp. Jane immigrated to Tasmania and then to Sydney, Australia. Her married names were Anderson, Abel and Thompson. Any information would be gratefully received. Thankyou, Jan.

It would be a good idea to explain what information you are looking for. You know the details of her life in Australia it seems, so you're looking for ancestor information?

Unfortunately, there is no record of the parents' marriage in the GRO index

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

so either they married before 1837 or the marriage wasn't registered. A certificate would have given you their fathers' names, but no such luck it seems.

I also can't see her in the 1851 or 1861 English censuses. Did the family emigrate when she was very young?

Hmm. Was she older than you thought?

1841 census

Name: Jane Parker
Age: 4
Estimated birth year: abt 1837
Gender: Female
Where born: Cambridgeshire, England

Civil parish: Wisbeach St Peter

Registration district: Wisbech
Sub-registration district: St Peter

Willm Parker 30
Jane Parker 30
Sarah Parker 8
Mary Parker 6
Jane Parker 4
Elissa Parker 11 Mo

Aargh, we have to introduce Jan to the "reply" button. ;) Up at the top of the thread -- click and the invisible box for adding to the thread will open. Stupid stupid stupid system ...

Thanks for your quick reply too, Jan -- so many people post and run, it's nice to have quick feedback.

I'm just going to copy your info here (and space it a bit to make it easier to follow) and then have to dash, myself -- it's nearing midnight here in Canada! I'll leave you in the hands of your wakeful fellow Aussies.

Thankyou for your quick reply! GR is fairly new to me so pls bear with me.

I am after ancestor information or anything really...

I know Jane was born around 1845 in Cambridge as I found this out on one of her marriage certificates. The date could be a bit different as she was married 3 times and each certificate had a different age on it (she seemed to get younger as the years passed!).
[Many people did, Jan, many people did. ;) -- JC]

Her parents are as stated, William Parker and Jane Sharp (from the latest marriage certificate).

The earliest I know of her being in Australia is when in 1860 she 'married' Charles Anderson, a Swedish man, in Hobart, Tasmania. There is no actual registration on the BDM in Tasmania so it may have been a 'de facto' marriage? They had a daughter in Launceston in 1861 - Hannah Louisa Anderson - who died in 1862 in Morven, Tasmania and there's actual birth/death certificates.

Jane and Charles then came to Sydney (?year) but I have the birth certificate for another of their children who was born in Sydney in 1866.

Charles died between 1866-1873 and Jane remarried Louis Abel in 1874; when he died in 1911 she married Alfred Thompson.

Very involved, but very intriguing! As mentioned, I don't have anything really on her early life in England or when she left, whether her parents/any siblings came with her, etc. but I do have quite a bit on her later years. Haven't yet come across death details which I'm sure would be helpful.

Thankyou for your interest, and if you can think of anything, I'd be so grateful. Regards, Jan.

Hmm, Sylvia.

There are a load of Sharps in Wisbeach St Peter in 1841 -- but Jane Parker the mother is shown as born not in county, herself.

I'm thinking the family emigrated because I don't see any of them in 51/61/

These look like the two youngest's births, and the birth certificate(s) could answer the question about Jane Sr's name.

Births Dec 1837
PARKER Jane Parker Wisbeach 14 131

Births Sep 1840
Parker Eliza Wisbech 14 164

Jan -- order certificates here:

Jan's still not gettin' it. ;)

New PM:

"Thanks Janey - and everyone - I am very grateful for the suggestions and help, and will follow it all up. Jan."

Jan -- please do post in your thread, using the purple Reply button. (*Don't* click on somebody's name and send a private message.)

That way
- everybody can see the replies/info all together
- I don't have to toggle back and forth to and from my inbox constantly!

Looks like a good start so far -- if you do order certificates, just come back to your thread and add the info in a message there -- you can find your thread any time by clicking on "my threads" over on the left of the discussion boards lists. Good luck!

Hi Ian,

Thankyou for your ideas on the BDM site - I have actually searched for Jane's death there, but haven't found it yet. There must just be something I'm missing...have tried everything but she and her last husband seem to have disappeared! They lived around the Balmain, N.S.W. area - have searched cemetery records, Ryerson Index, etc., etc. as well, to no avail! Thanks for your help; if you think of anything else, I'd be very pleased. Jan.
