Find Ancestors

We have a 'mystery' member of our family and i have ben looking for him for years now. The name Johnson doesn't help! He was the son of William Johnson and Ruth Kettle but Ruth died and William remarried to Annie Leah Palin. I have found William in the 1901 census living with Annie and William, his father. He was born in Stretford . no one in the family knows what happened to him after that. He was not living with his father and step mother at 1911 census time. There is a suggestion he may have been known as John because my husband's brother remembers an Uncle John from the Johnson side in the early 1940s but I still can't find him. Help -I don't know where to look and I am limited because I am in Australia.
