Would like any info on parents or siblings of my grandfather John William Clark born in Lanchester in about 1878.
I have his marraige and children but nothing on his family before that.
His marraige record shows the spelling to be Clarke but census records have it as Clark.
Wolud be grateful for any info
regards
Barbara

Have you found a baptism on the IGI. Should name parents

Do you have a copy of his marriage cert? If so, what was his father's name and occupation

What was his occupation on the marriage certificate and did it name his father? If you don't have the certificate who did he marry and when and where?

A copy of their marriage cert would give John's father's name and occupation which would help to narrow him down

Barbara Report 2 May 2010 17:04

That could be the John William boarding at the Ramshaws but that says he was born in Chester Le Street and the 1901 Census says Lanchester so I am not sure but my husband says Lanchester is near Chester Le Street.
I don't have any info on him as he died before I was born and I never really saw my grandmother Eliza after I was 8yrs so never heard any talk of that side of the family
Anything you can find is a plus
regards to all

I think you will find it is Lanchester and not Lancaster. Lanchester is indeed very close to Chester-le-Street. On census records people often gave differing places for where they were born. Sometimes they just gave the nearest "big" place to where they were actually born.

This could be a possible birth:-

Name: John William Clark
Year of Registration: 1878
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Lanchester (1875-1938)
County: Durham
Volume: 10a
Page: 342

This is the birth registration for the young 11 month old Samuel Clark on the 1891 census:-

Name: Samuel Clark
Year of Registration: 1900
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Auckland
County: Durham
Volume: 10a
Page: 221

Auckland registration district covers Spennymoor which is given as Samuel's birthplace on the 1891 census.

The certificate would confirm whether or not his mother was Eliza Bott, and you would then know that this family on the 1891 census was "your" family.

Thanks Kathleen
I have altered Lancaster to Lanchester. I meant to put Lanchester ( call it a senior moment)
I know that is the family as I already have Samuel and the other children it was just info on John Williams parents or siblings I have no idea of.
Much appreciated

I wonder if this could be John William with his parents in the 1881 census (name spelt with an "e"). He is the only one I can see born anywhere near Lanchester (Wheatley Hill is very close to Lanchester):-

Name: John Clarke
Age: 4
Estimated birth year: abt 1877
Relation: Son
Father's Name: William
Mother's Name: Jane Ann
Gender: Male
Where born: Wheatley Hill, Durham, England
Civil parish: Wingate
County/Island: Durham
Country: England
Street Address: 10 Grainger St
Education:

Employment status:

Household Members:
Name Age

William Clarke 32
Jane Ann Clarke 26
William Clarke 7
Mary Clarke 5
John Clarke 4
Andrew Clarke 1
John Sanders 53

Source Citation: Class: RG11; Piece: 4970; Folio: 76; Page: 10; GSU roll: 1342195.

You really need his marriage certificate to be sure of his father's name, or the Lanchester birth certificate from the1878 birth record I found.
