It would be easier to find him with his Son John on census if we had when and where John was born please..

Could look forever otherwise...

Clive Report 5 May 2010 14:35

john hill born 1873, from his death certificate, place of birth given as london. He was (oral history) a cabin boy who arrived in Queensland in 1887, travelled to Western Australia in 1891, married in WA in 1895. On this basis he would have been 14 when he arrived in Queensland so it would be likely that he could have been born prior to 1873 rather than later. Death cert shows death as 1946 age 73 years. Fathers name given as George on both marriage and Death certs. Mothers name given as Catherine Williamson on Death cert, hope this helps.....Clive

It will help with the search a lot..
As long as he was telling the truth of course !
And informants on his death cert knew facts for sure.
Off to look..

I am unable to find a George Hill in the job specified on marriage cert of John.

But he could so easily have made it up.

Better than a Cheesemongers assistant or General Dealer.

Could do with one of the Hill Family specialists here I think..

JaneyCanuck Report 5 May 2010 15:59

Hahaha, Hill family specialists.

Well, there is not a single George or John in my Hill/Moncks, believe it or not. George just wasn't a Devon/Cornwall name, and John wasn't favoured in either the Bond or Hill lines previous.

As for AuntySherlock's Hill, well who knows, eh? Perhaps John is the long-lost elder brother of her Ernest?? I mean, they were both born in London and both worked their way to Australia on board ship ...

George and Catherine seem to be uncommon names to pull out of a hat, if one were inventing parents. So I won't discount them off the top. (The opposite situation would be someone reporting a father with the same name and/or occupation as himself, often a giveaway for "fake!")

Lots of work to do today, but I'll give it a think ...

George and Sarah Ann do seem reasonable candidates so far.

thank you for your help. Informant on death certificate was his daughter who was a solicitors clerk and very methodical when it came to all things legal. This does not help if the truth had been stretched! The family left in the UK kept in touch with John after his marriage as a "parcel from the relatives" was received (oral history) which included a fur coat. The unsuitability of the gift was a family story for many years recalled by several relatives. John worked his way to Australia on board a sailing ship, name unknown, pictured on his grave. Clive
