Hi Jean

I think Elizabeth's mother's maiden name was ........

Jane Drury. On the 1841 census , she is living with her mother, Margaret , in Shrewsbury , Shropshire

She married William Smith December qtr 1847 / Shrewsbury / volume 18 page 239

Jane Smith, is a widow, and living with her mother in 1861

They had a daughter Mary in 1849, Mary is actually living with John and Jane , at The Barracks in 1871.............

I am sure that the marriage information that Astra has found is your couple, although Janes father was Thomas DRURY not Dowry

I would be happy to email you copies of the census, if you send me your email address in a PM

Hi Jean,

Thanks for the information, I had a similar problem with my grandfather, he was married and had a son and then he married my grandmother and he also put bachelor on their wedding certificate, funnily enough it's his mother Elizabeth whom I am tracing, if the 1881 census that I found with John Lewis on living in Wales with the Evans family, but in 1893 when Elizabeth gets married to James Orton, that would mean there is a 10 year period were John Lewis has died, is it possible that he could of had 6 children with Jane and never married? But it does say on Elizabeth's marriage certificate that her father John is deceased in 1893, I wonder can anyone find his death? This might give me a big clue.

Thanks once again for your kind help.

Jean........

Joan and Jane , may never have married, and Elizabeth may have been born , with her mother's maiden name.....

My grandfather, was "married" before he met my grandmother, and had three children with his first "wife". They appear on the 1901 census together. However, Caroline is on her own in 1911. On her death in 1919, it states she was the wife of .......... ........... address unknown. In fact, I have learned since, they never married at all.........

On his marriage to my grandmother, he stated he was a batchelor. To all intents he was a wonderful man.

My grandmother's first husband, was supposed to be deceased in 1903...he was alive and well, and living with his parents in 1911 !!

Thanks for helping me, guys. That is information that I haven't got and I greatly appreciate it. The only thing I can't understand is I have Elizabeth's marriage in 1893 and I have a 1911 census and she says that she was born in Chelsea, this is where it's getting confusing. I have been unable to trace a marriage for John and Jane, but I did find in 1881 a census for John Lewis, but when I looked it said he's unmarried. Maybe it's another John Lewis? I'm not too sure. I've still not been able to find what Jane's maiden name is. Can anyone find a marriage for John and Jane? Or an actual birth for Elizabeth? I would appreciate anything you find. I'm still trying to make sense of all this. Once again thank you everyone for taking the time to do this for me.

Does anyone have access to Ancestry as I have found an 1871 census on John Lewis and Jane Lewis. John Lewis was born in 1836 in Llandilo, Carmarthenshire, Wales. Residence at time of census was London, England in district of Chelsea South. Chelsea Barracks for the Scots Fusilier Guards. The same for Jane but she was born in 1830 and was born in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, England. Residence was the same as John at the time of census. They also had a daughter who was born approximately 1866 named Elizabeth. I have searched lots of sites, but I've been unable to find a marriage for John and Jane, can't even find Jane's maiden name and also can't find the birth of Elizabeth.

If anybody has access to Ancestry, I would appreciate it if you could take some time to look this up for me to find out if there's anything there that I don't know. At the moment I keep hitting dead ends.

Thanks everyone. Any information would be greatly appreciated,
Jean
