Elizabeth Report 26 Jun 2010 01:25

Update June 30th - relatives found - CASE CLOSED.

MANY THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP FROM EVERYONE HERE!

*************************
I am asking for help on behalf of the Perranporth memorial service organisers who are trying to trace the relatives of seven soldiers who were killed in 1940, including:

Name:JONES, WILLIAM MCCOLL (born GLASGOW)
Rank:Signalman
2582142
Regiment/Service:Royal Corps of Signals
Age:23
Date of Death:08/07/1940
Service No:2582142
Cemetery:GLASGOW (RIDDRIE PARK) CEMETERY
(His mother had him brought home for burial.)

Son of Charles Edward Jones and Margaret Stalker McRae.

I have posted more info about the original enquiry here:
http://perranporthveteransmissing.posterous.com/

I am not personally looking for relatives. I am just trying to help any remaining relatives find out about this memorial service. The organisers are keen to ensure that they track them down for the 70th and last memorial service.

Please could you let me know whether or not you think that you are related or if you can help by giving me any leads? I have agreed to help the organisers by following up any leads on Genes Reunited.

Many, many thanks to everyone who has already helped with the other queries I have posted recently about the other soldiers,

Best wishes,

Liz

EDIT UPDATE 28th June:

After a bit more slogging in the back-room, we now have a list of possible living relatives who we are trying to trace.

Where there are dates for births, marriages or deaths these were ALL registered in GLASGOW.

I would be really grateful for help searching Genes Family Trees (Ancestry too?) to find out whether or not any of the following seem to show up. UPDATE: I HAVE CHECKED ALL GENES TREES - RESULTS BELOW. If anyone has access to trees on other sites, I would be very grateful for any other leads as some of the "possible matches" where I have pm'ed Genes Tree owners are a mite tenuous ;-(

Many thanks again for all your help with this, here we go:

Oh, Elizabeth, the next one had to be Scottish!

20th century searches are harder for Scotland. Hopefully someone with spare ScotlandsPeople credits will be able to find siblings or such.

If not, I'll check tomorrow -- just putting this here to get it in "My threads" -- and try contacting our Scottish expert Tom.

Elizabeth, a tip -- make sure "Perranporth" is in each thread. I've passed on that you're doing these searches to a few people via another thread and said to watch out for them, but by the time they get a chance to look they could have sunk down the board. That way, searching the board for "Perranporth" will find them all.

I think he is the only Scottish one :-)

FannyByGaslight tells me she's taken a shot at the Scottish records but they are all impossible to check w/o sending for certificates.

I'll call on the good Tom to have a look at this one.

-- done, hope he's not on vacation!

One thing I haven't got clear on Elizabeth - the date of the event? Is this the one on July 17?

Tom reports that he will be happy to help but will not be able to access records until the first Monday in July. Hopefully, if he does identify nieces or nephews, e.g., someone will be able to hunt 'em up in time.

I did a tree search here at GR for Jones born in Perranporth (I can't tell at all what William McColl Jones's connection with the town might be). There was one result, 1945. The family in that case seems to come from another part of England (I checked birth and marriage indexes), but just in case, I have PMed that tree owner with the info about W McC Jones.

i've searched ancestry and still no luck!

Vicci

Vicci Report 30 Jun 2010 01:24

the only thing I've been able to come up with is a GR member Peter who has William McColl Jones' grandmother Catherine Bilsland in his tree. ** I have not sent him a message***

James Bilsland = Ann Donald
Catherine Bilsland b. 1841 Glasgow =(1) Andrew McCall m.1861
=(2) John Jones m.1870 (father Edward mother Ann McAvoy?)

>>Charles Frederick Jones b. 1878 Glasgow = Margaret Stalker McRae m. 1901 Glasgow
William McColl Jones b. 1917 Glasgow d. 1940

there are also trees on ancestry with Catherine in but no descendants shown.
