Find Ancestors

I'm trying to identify my COOK ancestors who emigrated from Egremont, Cumberland to New Zealand in the late 19th / early 20th century. I don't have any information as to where they went but probably somewhere for employment as miners.

I don't have any names of those who emigrated, but I have quite a lot of information on the many COOKs in Cumberland so one name might be all I need.

Can anyone help please.

We have been in touch before, with our Cook relatives in Egremont. I can only tell you that Lawson Cook, born 1836, married Margaret Brocklebank in 1855 and emigrated to USA (Nebraska) in 1895 to join his family there. His parents were James Cook and Jane Pickering and Jane died in Nebraska in 1896 and was born in 1812.

Many thanks for that information. During my researches I had seen COOKs in America but was not sure if they were in my part of the family. Lawson COOK was my great (x3) great uncle, brother of my great (x3) grandfather William COOK (1843). Many thanks once again for the information.

Thank you for all the information which has proved very useful in identifying the American emigrants and connecting them to the rest of the family.

I now think the family who emigrated to New Zealand was my great (x3) grandfather William COOK (1843) and his family except my great (x2) grandfather James COOK (1867).

In 1891 William was a widower living at 31 Church Street, Egremont. With him was his daughter Elizabeth (c1872), her husband Richard GLOVER (c1869) and their daughter Mary Ann C GLOVER (1890) so they must have emigrated after 1891.

William had five children : Jane (1863), Mary (1865), James (1867), Ann (1869) and Elizabeth (1872) so any descendants in New Zealand would, most likely, not have the COOK surname and apart from Elizabeth I do not know any of the spouses.

My great (x2) grandfather James visited New Zealand some time around 1910 - 1912 to visit his family. My father tells that his mother recalled at the age of about 7 years (c1911) going to the railway station in Egremont to meet him on his return - he brought her a rag doll as a present from New Zealand. He worked his return trip on a boat carrying cattle and in the census of 1911 was in Egremont.

Does this help to identify any of the family in New Zealand? I would very much appreciate any information that would help.

I've just discovered a New Zealand BMD index online at https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz. I looked up a death for Richard GLOVER around 1950 but the only one was a Richard John (Registration Number 1948/19181) at the age of 60 years which is not consistent with my Ricard (no second forename) who was born c1869.

Using the same index I've found:

Deaths:

1944/30580 - Glover, Richard - 75 years
1948/19761 - Glover, Elizabeth - 75 years
These ages are consistent with the births of my Richard and Elizabeth assuming the first part of the Reference Number is the year.

Births:

1894/18399 - Glover, Hannah to Elizabeth & Richard.
1895/1508 - Glover, Jane to Elizabeth & Richard.

If these are the children of Richard & Elizabeth GLOVER who emigrated from Egremont, then the emigration was between 1891 (after the census) and 1894.

Now, do I spend the 20.00NZ$ each for the printouts???
