Death record (c1902) for William Henry TAYLOR

I am trying to find the death record for my great grandfather William Henry TAYLOR.

He was born c1867 in Bishop's Tawton, Devonshire and married Annie Herbert JAMES, my great grandmother on 30 July 1889 in Arlecdon, Cumberland (I have a copy of the marriage certificate). They had three children; Florence Lingford (1890) in Frizington, Cumberland), Ida - my grandmother - (1 Nov 1891 in Frizington, Cumberland) and Elsie French (9 Dec 1899 in Kimberley, South Africa). I have so far been unable to identify his birth certificate or his parents. Initially the evidence pointed to him being the son of William TAYLOR (1841 - 1883) & Elizabeth RULE (1843 - ?) but information I have recently found suggests he was actually their nephew.

On 25 April 1902 he left his employment with De Beers Mine in Kimberley, South Africa "on sick leave to England". He did not return to Cumberland. I thought I had found his death in Liverpool and obtained the death certificate. This shows the same name and the age (34 years) is right. His occupation was given as Distillery Fireman at 9 Bostock Street and cause of death was given as "Shock due to scalding received through the explosion of a boiler". A coroner's inquest was held in Liverpool on 10 October 1902.

This could possibly be my grandfather - he may have stayed in Liverpool on his return from South Africa but I don't know how to resolve the question as I understand coroner's reports pre 1937 in Liverpool have been destroyed.

Can anyone help or make suggestions please?

Thanks Pat.

I don't think it's the 1910 one as my great grandmother remarried before 1906 and I don't think she was divorced from William Henry. The one in 1904 looks worth further investigation.

Can anyone help with historic newspaper reports? Perhaps the incident in Liverpool (29 September 1902) was in the newspapers at the time.

Hello,

I now have indications, from some papers of my now deceased aunt (she was grand daughter of William Henry TAYLOR), that he died and was buried in South Africa. Does anyone know if there would have been any sort of registers of these events and how they might be accessed.

Bob.

Hello All,

Found it !!

I now have information (copies of newspaper cuttings etc. from Africana Library in Kimberley) that William Henry TAYLOR died and was buried in Kimberley, South Africa. He died from the effects of miner's phthisis (dust on the lungs) on 1 January 1903 and was buried on 2 January 1903 in Gladstone Cemetery, Kimberley. I'm just waiting now for copy of official death certtificate from South African High Commission.
Many thanks to all for help & suggestions.

Regards. Bob.
