OR

the marriage broke up

but they did not get divorced ..... this was extremely expensive and very difficult to get in those days

so the scenario I am about to propose happened quite often.

They moved to different parts of the same town, or one moved to another town

One or both got married again, saying they were widowed

This of course means that the second marriage was bigamous ......... but who would know?

hi
alice selby on her marriage to joseph stenson states she his a widow, solomon and alices last son was born 1875, so there in theory should be a death between 1875/80 unless they just split up or he changed his name in which case we may never find him

Strange only one death shows on freebmd in 1909 and also only one birth. 1849...could be him??

Hmm; usually when there's a time on the birth certificate it means they're a twin, but couldn't see one on Free BMD.

I've found this death (the only Soloman Selby death I could find on Free BMD) but the age isn't right (depends who the informant was, I suppose):

SELBY Soloman 67 Cardiff 11a 198

there's something wrong here

in my family i have a soloman selby born 1849 nottingham
in 1870 he married alice hearson in nottingham
in 1881 alice marrys again to a joseph stenson

But in the 1881 posted by Choccy .... Alice is only 20, which means she married Soloman at age 10 ...... which is impossible!

In 1891, she's 37, which would make her 17 in 1870 ..... possible!
