You can contact Glasgow University regarding Ancestor research:

Details of graduates from 1451 to 1896

Looks promising.

Another thought Ken.

Dont suppose you have an exact date of birth for James?

ken

ken Report 21 Jul 2010 21:10

I am afraid i have no knowledge of siblings. With James dying when my father was only six months he knew very little and my father no longer with us to question further.
Will try google, thanks for info.

Vivienne,
Thank you that would be great. I look forward to hearing back from you and please thank your friend. My grandfather James i believe attended Glasgow uni, do you know if they hold records of any kind. Probably not back that far!

I am not finding him with father George at all.

I have had a thought though.

I will ask someone if they would search for a likely birth for him who works in Scottish BMDS.

It may take him a few days to get back to us,so patience will be needed.

Off to send a message...

The 1861 posted by Jean has Isabella as a power loom weaver.
In 1871 she has remarried to David Finlay and James is down as stepson.(Factory Worker)

But none of that helps really as no George there..

No prob Ken.

At least you replied on here and not by Personal Message which no one but I can see.

We need all info on here so others can see as more people searching the better.

So now I go look for James with father George a Commercial Traveller on 1861.

Robertson is a pretty common name unfortunately,so I may be some time,if I do find him.

On first look there are no James Robertsons born Glasgow 1858ish with father George on 1861 census of Scotland, but will now look again.

Anyone have info on my grandfather James Robertson, born Glasgow 1857, died in Manchester 1923 when my father was 6 months old. His father was George do not know mother. He married my grandma Annie Sheard in 1917, he had been married before to whom i do not know. he is in the 1911 census as a widow and inmate in a Salvation army home. His death certificate states he was clerk in Salvation army office in Chorlton Upon Medlock manchester. If anyone can help with his parents name or first wife (may have had children with) i would be very grateful.
