Searching for best friends birth mother

My friend's birth mother gave her up for adoption and signed to this effect in Liverpool 1937 Her name was Mary Evans formerly Gibson. My friend has 5 daughters who have their own families now. She only discovered she was adopted when her adoptive mother died. Her daughters have tried to find her and traveled to Liverpool. This leaves so many unanswered questions for them all.
Today I tried FreeBMD and was told there was 3676 matches but their maximum was 3000 so no answers and I wondered does this happen often ? I feel at a loss.

Adoption is a very personnal matter, please don't put your friend's name or any names of living people on here for the whole world to see

Adoptees and birth relatives can register their details on the Adoption Contact Register at the General Register Office, Southport.(Details on their website). Also, try NORCAP.

Hi Madeline

Sorry I'm late finding this. Would these facilities have been available in the 1930's ?

Many thanks

Hi Norma,
I don't know, but I believe The General Register Office is where all adoption records available are held now, so your friend and/or her daughters have nothing to lose by registering their details with them, just in case her birth mother or her family have registered theirs. If there's a match, she'll be contacted by the administrators of the Adoption Contact Register.
I have a half-brother who was adopted in the early 1960s and have registered there, and with NORCAP, in case he or a member of his family ever search for our Mum.
Good luck to your friend and her family. x

Hello Madeline
Glad I checked in today to find your post.
I have downloaded application forms from NORCAP ( never heard of them)
Maureen is going to register, £15 is very reasonable.
Will keep in touch.
Many thanks
Norma

Thanks for replying Norma, glad your friend is registering with NORCAP, and please don't forget about the Adoption Contact Register too, as it's where I believe people searching for adoptees/birth families will eventually be directed to, and sounds to me like the best place to be! x
